Mahaffey runner-up at LSC championship

FINAL RESULTSť

TROPHY CLUB, Texas (April 18) - Owen Mahaffey finished as the individual runner-up for the second straight year Tuesday at the Lone Star Conference men's golf championships.

Mahaffey, who entered the day with a three-shot lead, slipped into a tie for first with a final-round 74 and lost to Central Oklahoma's Todd Dayton on the first hole of a sudden death playoff. As a team, the Aggies finished in third, just one stroke out of a playoff, which Northeastern State won over UCO.

Coach Jerry Hrnciar's squad had its opportunities to capture a seventh conference title on Tuesday. But Travis Lovins' long birdie attempt on the final hole lipped out and Mahaffey's approach to the 18th green landed well short of the hole, leaving the Wichita Falls junior with a long birdie putt to win the individual title outright and send the Aggies into a three-way tie for the team lead.

Northeastern won its second straight LSC team title with a one-stroke victory over UCO on the first playoff hole. The Aggies finished a stroke back with a combined team score of 866 over 54 holes on the Trophy Club Country Club's Hogan Course. All three teams will meet up again early next month at the NCAA II South/South Central Super Regional, hosted by Cameron at The Territory Country Club on May 1-3.

In addition to Mahaffey, two other Aggies finished among the individual Top 10. Matt Trammel carded a final-round 69 to vault to eighth place, while Lovins shot a one-under 71 Tuesday to finish tied for ninth. Despite the two-over-par score in the final round, Mahaffey finished with a three-round total of 211 (-5).

Cane Shumaker tied for 18th with a 224 total, while Cade Lewis rallied with a final-round 71 to post a 231 total.
