ABILENE, Texas (May 8) - Aaron Upshaw's three-run homer for Southeastern Oklahoma State in the ninth inning capped a dramatic comeback for the Savage Storm and eliminated the Cameron baseball team from its first Lone Star Conference postseason tournament.
Coach Todd Holland's Aggies saw a 4-0 lead evaporate in the final three innings, as SOSU scored three in the seventh and three more on Upshaw's homer in the ninth to end Cameron's season. Cameron finished the season with an overall record of 34-22, marking the highest victory total for the Aggies since the 1988 squad posted a 36-22 record.
Southeastern (27-28) appeared to be on the ropes in Monday's elimination game on Day 3 of the conference tournament. But the Savage Storm pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh off Aggie starter Ryan Totte. The Aggie left-hander had limited SOSU to just four hits through the first six innings, but left the game after surrendering back-to-back doubles to Upshaw and Mason Parham with two outs in the seventh.
The hits brought Southeastern to within a run at 4-3, but Cameron reliever Danny Lee got Daniel Hoegh to ground out to end the threat in the seventh and worked a three-up, three-down eighth before turning the ball over to Aggie senior L.J. Willis to start the ninth.
After a pair of one-out singles put runners on the corners for SOSU, Upshaw homered to left field to put the Savage Storm up by two runs.
Jordan Semore turned in the second straight complete-game effort against the Aggies in the tournament on the mound Monday. Semore walked none and struck out nine, including the last out of the game, for his eighth win. Willis took the loss for Cameron, allowing three runs on five hits.
Cameron broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when Blake Hughes scored on an SOSU throwing error. The Aggies then made it a 4-0 game in the fifth, scoring once on an RBI single by Hughes before B.J. Cole laced a two-run double down the left field line.
