Detroit native signs with Aggies
LAWTON, Okla. (May 9) – Cameron University head men’s basketball coach Maury Leitzke continued to add to the Aggies’ roster for next season on Wednesday, announcing the signing of Detroit native Gregory Mercer. A 6-6 junior forward, Mercer is one of two players signed by Leitzke to the Aggies’ spring recruiting class.
Mercer averaged 10 points and eight rebounds a game in his final year at Cypress Community College, where he earned the Chargers’ team awards for Most Improved Player and Defensive MVP in 2005. He led the team in blocks during the 2004-05 season, as well, while also averaging three assists per game.
At Southfield (Mich.) High School, Mercer participated in both basketball as a power forward and center, and football as a defensive end.
"Gregory is going to be a big addition to our frontcourt presence next season," Leitzke said. "He’s a very talented player and a hard worker and I am excited that he will be joining our squad."
Cameron finished the 2005-06 season with a 12-15 record. The Aggies’ final eight losses of the season came by an average of just 4.2 points, including three overtime setbacks in Lone Star Conference North Division play. Three Cameron players earned individual conference postseason honors. Senior center Arthur Trousdell and junior guard Matt Reid were named to the men's All-LSC North second team, while junior Brandon Smith was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year in the division.
