Cameron's Herbert named to All-Region squad

John HerbertLAWTON, Okla. (May 22) – Cameron University senior John Herbert is one of 16 players named to this year’s Rawlings/ABCA All-South Central Region team, according to a release by the American Baseball Coaches Association. A Lawton native, Herbert was named to the all-region team after earning first team All-Lone Star Conference North Division honors earlier this month.

A two-year member of the Aggie baseball team, Herbert started all 56 games for Cameron this season, helping the Aggies to their highest win total in nearly 20 years, as well as a share of the LSC North Division regular-season title. Herbert led the Aggies this season with a .355 batting average, while also leading the team in total hits. He totaled 49 runs scored, 10 home runs and 58 runs batted in, and posted a team-best .993 fielding percentage. Herbert finished third on the team with 16 doubles and was named the LSC North Hitter of the Week on April 12.

As a junior in 2005, Herbert earned second team All-LSC North honors and ranked in the Top 10 nationally in RBI per game. He also ranked among the Top 40 hitters in NCAA Division II that season, batting a whopping .420. Herbert transferred to Cameron after spending two seasons at Vernon (Texas) College. At Lawton’s Eisenhower High School, he was an all-district pick as a senior.

Under third-year head coach Todd Holland, Cameron concluded the 2006 season with its first-ever appearance in the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament. The Aggies finished with an overall record of 34-22, marking the team’s highest win total since the 1988 Cameron squad posted a 36-22 mark. Nine Cameron players, including Herbert, received individual postseason recognition in the conference. Holland was named the LSC North Co-Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
