Lovins, Mahaffey named GCAA All-Americans
NORMAN, Okla. (May 25) - Cameron senior golfer Travis Lovins has been named to the GCAA/PING All-America second team, while junior teammate Owen Mahaffey has earned All-America honorable mention, according to a release by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
Both Aggies were among 54 NCAA Division II players nationwide honored by the coaches' organization, adding to an already impressive list of All-American golfers in school history. For Lovins, the award marks the second straight All-American season for the Canadian, Texas, product after earning honorable mention honors in 2005. Mahaffey, a Wichita Falls product who was a third team All-American as a freshman in 2004 and earned honorable mention last year, became just the second Aggie ever, with Jason Jeter, to earn All-America honors in three seasons.
As a junior this year, Mahaffey will have an opportunity to become Cameron's only four-time All-American next season.
Both players finished among the Top 10 individual competitors at last week's NCAA Division II National Championships, leading 14th-ranked Cameron to its fifth Top 10 team finish at the national tournament since 1990. Mahaffey finished ninth among the 105 competitors with a four-round total of 290 (+10), while Lovins finished a stroke back in 10th place, as Cameron finished tied for seventh in the 20-team event.
"Travis was probably one of the most consistent players in the South Central Region this season and Owen had a very strong finish to the year," Cameron head coach Jerry Hrnciar said. "Both players are very deserving of these awards. With multiple All-American honors for each of them, they are now definitely in an elite class."
Lovins captured the individual title at last month's NCAA II South Central Regional Championships and finished in the Top 10 in 11 of 12 events this season, including seven Top 5 finishes. He led the team with a 72.85 scoring average, good for 12th among all NCAA Division II players. Mahaffey was the individual runner-up at the Lone Star Conference Championships. He notched eight Top 10 finishes this season while finishing 27th in the nation with a 73.44 scoring average.
In all, Cameron has totaled 34 All-American awards and an additional 17 All-America Scholar honorees under Hrnciar. The Aggies have 16 national tournament appearances, including winning the 1983 NAIA national title. Cameron’s men’s golf program has failed to produce at least one All-American in only three seasons since 1993.
