Collin County transfers sign with Aggie Tennis

LAWTON, Okla. (June 15) – Cameron University tennis coach James Helvey has announced the addition of two players expected to make an immediate impact on the Aggie men’s squad next season. Collin County Community College teammates Agustin Criado and Ignacio Murgier have committed to continue their collegiate careers at Cameron this fall.

Both accomplished players at CCCC and natives of Argentina, Criado and Murgier helped lead the Cougars to a pair of Top 5 finishes at the NJCAA national championships during their junior college careers. Collin County won the NJCAA Region V team title this season and placed third while serving as host school at the national tournament. The Cougars also placed third with Criado and Murgier in the lineup at nationals in 2005.

A product of Cordoba, Argentina, Criado advanced to the semifinals of the Flight 2 doubles bracket at the 2006 national tournament, losing as the No. 3 seed to the top-seeded eventual national champions. He also was seeded third in the Flight 4 singles bracket at nationals and advanced to the semifinals, where he dropped a three-set match to the tournament’s No. 2 seeded player. In 2005, Criado was the top seed in the Flight 2 doubles draw at the national tournament and made it to the championship match. He also finished as the national runner-up as the No. 2 seed in Flight 4 singles.

Murgier experienced similar success in his two seasons with the Cougars. This year, the Mar del Plata, Argentina, native reached the semifinals of the Flight 3 doubles bracket at the national tournament as the No. 3 seed, falling to the eventual national champions. As the No. 5 seed in the Flight 2 singles draw, Murgier also advanced to the quarterfinals of the national tournament. In his freshman campaign, he was the No. 3 seed in the Flight 3 singles bracket at nationals and made it to the tournament semifinals.

Cameron finished the 2006 season with an overall record of 15-8 and advanced to NCAA Division II national tournament play for the 12th consecutive season under Helvey. The Aggies were rated as high as No. 16 in the nation this year and spent the entire regular season ranked among the Top 25 teams at the Division II level. At the Lone Star Conference individual championships last fall, the Aggie men were represented in the championship matches in six of the nine flights (six singles, three doubles) and came away with five individual conference titles.
