Ags run with the best, finish 20th
STILLWATER, Oklahoma (September 30) – The Aggie Cross Country team traveled to Stillwater this Saturday to compete in the Oklahoma State University Cowboy Jamboree. The 8-kilometer race featured some of the best programs in the area, and really showed head coach Matt Aguero what his runners could do.
The Cameron team decided to run in the University division of the race, competing against the likes of Oklahoma State, Kansas State, and Arkansas, among others, and finished 20th out of the 21 teams in the division.
Most Division II programs choose to run in the College division of the race. Had Cameron run in the College division, they would have finished a strong 11th out of 21 teams.
“We decided to run in the University race to see how our guys would do against the big schools,” said Coach Aguero. “I am definitely pleased with our performance. We have improved so much over the last year.”
Freshman runner David Chirchir was again feeling ill prior to the race, but still managed to come in 38th overall. He was taken to the doctor after the event and was diagnosed with a stomach virus. “Had David been healthy for the race, he would have definitely come in the Top 15,” said Coach Aguero.
George Njuguna finished 54th overall, which is very impressive considering he was not even in the Top 100 at the halfway mark. “George ran a very smart race and I am very pleased with how he ran,” said Coach Aguero. “He passed a lot of people.”
Freshmen Sean Richmond, Ben Ware, and Guy Narcomey finished No. 129, 136, and 139, respectively.
The Aggies next host the Southwest Oklahoma Walking/Running Club in a 3-mile dual this Friday.
