CU ends season, crowns 4 champions
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (October 9) – The Cameron Aggie tennis team made the short trip down Highway 44 this weekend to compete in the annual Lone Star Conference Individual tournament. Both the men’s and women’s teams were in full force.
At the end of the three-day tournament, Cameron crowned four champions, all on the men’s side. The Aggies took four of the six individual men’s crowns and was very impressive at the event. The tournament was hosted by Midwestern State University and took place at both the Weeks Park (men) and Hamilton Park (women) Tennis Centers.
Senior Tin Hinst (6-1, 6-3), juniors Nicolas Mascheroni (6-4, 6-3) and Agustin Criado (6-4, 7-5), and freshman Vitas Van Dijk (6-4, 6-2) all won singles titles for the Aggies. The team almost added two of the three doubles championships but Mascheroni and junior Jordi Mullor, and Hinst and junior Kevin Harper fell in their final matches. Junior Ignacio Murgier also lost his bid in a finals match, losing to Stefan McKinney of Midwestern State, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.
Despite the losses, head coach James Helvey was pleased with his team’s performance. “I’m very proud of my players. We have been working hard, have hit a lot of balls, and done quite a bit of work on our fitness,” he said. “It all really started to show towards the end of the (fall) season.”
The Aggies won four of nine men’s flights, but were in contention to win seven. “It would have been great to win seven of the nine, but our conference is very tough and very deep,” Coach Helvey said. “We did better than any other team, and to be in the finals of seven flights is tough. I’m just elated.”
On the women’s side, senior Sandra-Leigh King made it to the women’s singles final but fell 6-2, 6-3 to Abilene Christian’s Sarah Drummond. “Sandra-Leigh played really well. We are very proud of her,” Coach Helvey said.
The LSC Individual Tournament concludes the fall season for the Aggies, who resume play this February for the start of the spring season. “The fall season was a huge success, especially for the men. The women’s team has a little bit of work to do,” Coach Helvey said.
