Men's Golf finishes 8th in Match Play
DURANT, Okla. (October 11) - The Cameron Men’s Golf team was in action over the weekend, competing in the Southeastern Oklahoma State Texoma Cup Matches. Similar to the PGA’s Ryder Cup, the Texoma Cup Matches is a match-play tournament that pits schools against each other in both one-on-one and four ball play.
“I think the (match play) format is a great thing for college golf. Everyone enjoyed it, and it went over great,” head coach Jerry Hrnciar said.
Competing against the likes of Midwestern State and Central Oklahoma, the Aggies came in eighth out of eight teams. The team’s poor finish can be attributed to Coach Hrnciar’s decision to take some of the youngest and least experienced members of the Aggie Golf team in order to give them much needed exposure to competitive golf.
“Our young guys did fair. I wanted to give them experience and allow them to learn how to compete. There is no better way to compete than in match play,” he said.
Freshmen Justin Jang and Brett Leavell were two of the bright spots for Coach Hrnciar’s squad. “Justin played better than he has been qualifying. This was a breakout tournament for him,” Coach Hrnciar said. “Brett has started to come into his own. I hadn’t expected this much out of him yet.”
The team lost all three matches by a score of 5-4, and each match seemed to go down to the wire. “I am very disappointed,” Coach Hrnciar said. “One point would have won it for us, but that’s how you learn. Overall it was a good experience.”
Expect the Cameron’s men’s golf team to get back on track when they travel to San Antonio this weekend for the St. Mary’s Rattle Invitational.
