Lady Ags set new record at Classic, finish 3rd
GRANBURY, Texas (October 11) – The Cameron women’s golf team set a new low round score at last weekend’s Tarleton State Invitational/Coca-Cola Classic. The team shot a first round score of 311, breaking the previous record by six strokes, but shot an even better 305 on the second day to finish third out of seventeen schools.
Last year the Lady Aggies were shooting around 340 for a two-day event. "The improvement we’ve shown is fantastic," head coach Rick Goodwin said. "After the first day the girls were pretty euphoric and we didn’t want to drop off in the second day."
The tournament was played at the Harbor Lakes Golf Club, and featured schools such as St. Edwards University and Dallas Baptist University, among others.
The Aggies were led by senior Laura Madden who was named to the All-Tournament team. She shot an even par on the first day to take second place, but finished the tournament in a tie for third place overall. Her two-day score of 148 was just two strokes behind Lon Morris Community College’s Fiona Smith, who won the event.
Senior Janel Bailey (14) and sophomore Renee Breeze (19) were the only other Aggies to finish in the top twenty golfers. They shot total scores of 153 and 156, respectively.
"Janel is a real solid player. She is going to be the difference maker on this year’s team," Goodwin said. "We know we are going to be able to count on her." Bailey is a newcomer to Goodwin’s squad, recently transferring from McNeese State University, a Division-I school.
"Breeze really stepped it up to," he added. "She shot her career low and was a huge, unexpected difference maker."
Senior Krystal McCorgary finished at No. 31 with a two-day score of 159. Her second round score of 77 was her best finish as a Cameron Aggie.
Sophomore Lauren Gonzales finished in a tie at No. 50 with a two-day score of 165. "Gonzales had an off week for us, but you can expect her to bounce back at home this week."
The Lady Aggie golf team hosts the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Tournament at the Lawton Country Club this weekend. The event will feature teams such as Tarleton, Southwestern Oklahoma, and defending junior college national champion Redlands Community College.
"After the last tournament we have high expectations that will be hard to maintain," Goodwin said. "But I am feeling confident about our team from top to bottom. We will want to maintain the consistency of having all players break 80, and maintain our level of play."
