Chirchir sets new Cameron record at Chile Pepper
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark (October 16) – The Cameron Aggie cross country team ran in the University of Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival over the weekend in their first 10-kilometer race of the season. Due to medical reasons, head coach Matt Aguero was only able to allow four runners to compete.
Freshman David Chirchir set a new Cameron record finishing the race with a time of 31:06.7, nearly a minute faster than the previous record he set at last year’s Texas Relays. Chirchir finished at No. 71 overall.
"David ran really well for us," head coach Matt Aguero said. "I was pleased with how we ran against the other schools, especially considering we only ran four guys."
Coach Aguero also held an additional two runners out to rest up for this weekend’s conference meet. Since there were only four Aggie runners in competition, and not the required five, they did not record a team finish.
The Chile Pepper Festival was one of the biggest events of the season and showcased over 40 schools, 34 of which were Division-I programs. Cameron usually runs with other Division-II schools, but Coach Aguero likes to see what his runners can do when up against the big programs.
Freshmen Ben Ware and Guy Narcomey finished at No. 276 and 278, respectively, with times of 37:15.5 and 37:44.7. Newcomer Bira Vidal finished at No. 289 with a time of 46:16.5. Vidal is a sophomore who joined Coach Aguero’s roster last week.
The Aggies will compete in the Lone Star Conference Championships this weekend in Stephenville, Texas. The event will be a 8-kilometer run and will feature each of the teams in the conference. The fall cross country season comes to a close in early November with the NCAA regional and national events.
