Aggie Golfers end season on high note

SAN ANTONIO, Texas. (October 17) – The Cameron men’s golf team was in action this week, competing in the St. Mary’s Rattle Invitational in San Antonio. The team finished tenth out of twenty teams in the three-round event. Texas A&M University won the event by four strokes, and St. Edwards’s Nick Cristea won the individual title by six strokes.

"I’m a little disappointed," head coach Jerry Hrnciar said. "We learned a lot about ourselves though. It was a really tight tournament where only one shot could make a huge difference. We didn’t putt well, and could have finished fourth or fifth."

The Rattle Invitational is one of the bigger events on the fall golf schedule, and features many Division-I programs. Many Lone Star Conference teams, in addition to schools like Baylor University, all made the trip to South Texas.

Junior Cane Shumaker finished with the best score on the Aggie team, coming in tied for No. 15 overall. He shot a three-round total of 219, just eleven strokes behind the winner. Shumaker was the only Aggie to finish in the top twenty.

Senior Matt Trammell and freshman Michael Lee were the only other Aggies to finish in the top fifty, finishing at No. 25 (222) and No. 31 (223), respectively.

"This season we were able to develop a lot of young players. Everyone has improved and the experience will definitely pay off," Coach Hrnciar said. "Next spring we will be up there with just about anybody and won’t be backing down." Both the Cameron women’s and men’s golf teams will now be entering the offseason portion of their schedule, and will return to competitive action in February.
