Ags mark their 'Territory' with win
DUNCAN, Okla. (September 20) – The men's golf team entered the final round of the Territory Golf Classic on Tuesday hoping to avoid a repeat performance of last week. After leading the field going into the clubhouse on Monday, the Ags fell apart and failed to hold onto their overall lead. Head Coach Jerry Hrnciar's players vowed to not let that happen this week.
After final round scores were calculated, Cameron won the Territory Golf Classic by an amazing thirteen overall strokes, nine of which came after the first day. Last week the Aggies led the field by four strokes after the first day, but fell to third place by the end of the event.
Sophomore Peter Svajlen led the field after the first day with a first round score of 68, but finished the tournament in 2nd place after a par finish on Tuesday. Svajlen was named to the All-Tournament Team and finished just one stroke behind Nick Cristea of St. Edwards.
Inclement weather over the weekend delayed the start of the first round while the course was cleaned and readied for play. After the course was set, Coach Hrciar said he believed the pin placement was rather tough.
"The pin placement the first day was pretty tough, much tougher than it was at last year's regional tournament. The second day's placement was a little easier though, so it seemed to balance out," said Coach Hrnciar.
Senior Matt Trammell and junior Cane Shumaker finished in a tie for 6th place overall, with a two-day score of 142. Freshman Michael Lee was the only other Aggie to finish in the Top 20. He finished in 9th place with an overall score of 145. All three finished with below-70 scores for the second round.
The Aggies next travel to Springfield, Missouri, from October 1-3 to play in the Drury/Deerfield Intercontinental.
