Balancing college life as a student-athlete can be tough, but thanks to the generosity of family and friends of the late Floss Belland that task will be made easier for women golfers at Cameron University. CU President Cindy Ross recently announced the establishment of the Floss Belland Endowed Scholarship in Women’s Golf.
“My mother was always a champion for the underdog, and this scholarship is such a fitting tribute to her as it will afford women golfers the financial means to complete a bachelor’s degree that may have otherwise not been possible,” said Kathleen Glenn, Belland’s daughter. “Cameron University has touched our family in so many ways, and we are honored to provide this gift to the University and its students.”
The endowed scholarship was established through the generosity of family and friends who were touched by Belland’s life, chiefly her husband of 66 years, Walt Belland and daughter Kathleen Glenn. Contributors donated approximately $11,000 for the scholarship.
Designed to assist former members of the Cameron women’s golf team who have exhausted their NCAA eligibility but still need credit hours to graduate, the scholarship will provide financial assistance during the student’s final year at Cameron. The first Floss Belland Endowed Scholarship will be presented in the Fall 2007 semester.
“Floss Belland was one of Cameron’s most beloved supporters, and we are deeply grateful to her friends and family who made this scholarship in her honor possible,” said Ross. “This gift is a lasting recognition to Mrs. Belland, her love of golf and her support of Cameron University.”
Belland grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota where she excelled at golf and enjoyed all physical activities. She played in golf tournaments across the U.S., Turkey and other locations around the globe. She was a member of the Ladies Golf Association, often organizing events such as the Annual Bloomer Cannon Golf Tournament at Ft. Sill.
“Mother was an amazing athlete,” said Glenn. “She played golf nearly all her life, and she even snow skied in Vail, Colorado for her 80th birthday.”
Belland also dedicated her time to volunteering with the Red Cross and the Ladies Guild at Holy Family Catholic Church of Lawton. The Bellands have a long history of support for Cameron University, joining the CU President’s Partners in 1990 as Lifetime members.
