Aggies still winless after sweep by ASU
SAN ANGELO, Texas (February 5) – The Aggie softball team (0-7) is still looking for their first victory of the season after falling to the Angelo State Rambelles (8-0) in a double-header this afternoon. Cameron lost their first game by the score 12-5, and lost the second contest 2-1. The Ags went 0-5 in the St. Mary’s University Invitational tournament that began the season over the weekend.
“If we would have played better defense and made more plays then we would have won,” Head Coach Richie Nye said. “Winning can be contagious and if we can turn it around we will be able to multiple games in a row.” Nye is in his first year at the helm of the Aggie softball team.
The Aggies found themselves down 6-0 early in the first match-up and were unable to recover. Their four errors certainly didn’t make things any easier, as Cameron is still struggling to balance their offensive and defensive play.
“When we play good defense we don’t hit, and when we hit we have too many errors,” Coach Nye said. “If we can put everything together then we have a good team. We are close. We are real close. We just need to flip it around.”
Senior shortstop Stephanie Bour continued her strong start to the 2007 season going 2-4 in the first game with a team-high 3 RBI’s, including one of the team’s two home runs. Junior outfielder Whitney Richardson hit the other Aggie homerun and went 2-2 with two RBI’s.
“Whitney (Richardson) played a great game,” Coach Nye said. “She struggled a bit over the weekend but played really well today, probably the best on the team.”
The second game of the afternoon proved to be a pitcher’s duel, as the score was deadlocked at zero going into the bottom of the sixth inning. ASU took the lead 1-0 going into the final frame, but Cameron tied the ballgame at one in the top of the seventh. A walk early in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to be the final run the Rambelles needed to secure their victory.
Senior pitcher Amanda Hibbs had a great outing on the mound, pitching a shutout into the sixth inning. She faced 23 batters and gave up 5 hits. She also recorded two walks and two strikeouts.
“Amanda (Hibbs) pitched great and really hit her spot,” Coach Nye said. “She kept the ball down, struck out a few, and did her job. Overall she did great and was able to get ahead of some batters.”
The Aggies were held to just 4 hits in the second game with sophomore catcher/outfielder Jenna Boren knocking in the lone run. Boren finished 1-3 with one strikeout. Sophomore second baseman Megan Young and the aforementioned Richardson were responsible for the other three Aggie hits. Young finished the game 1-3 and scored Cameron’s only run. Richardson again went 2-2 and finished the day with a 1.000 batting average in the two games versus ASU.
The Aggies travel to Phoenix, Arizona next week to participate in the NCAA Division II Leadoff Classic. The tournament runs from February 15th-17th.
