Cameron Men's Golf to Start Spring Season

By Jerry Hrnciar
Cameron Men’s Golf Team will be coming out of the ice box straight into the fire as they tee-off Monday in the St. Edward’s Invitational in Austin, Texas.  The fire will be provided by the best in D-II with the host being ranked at #2, followed by #5 Abilene Christian, #9 Barry and #11 Central Oklahoma, U. of Texas J.V. and Baylor J.V.

Cameron is ranked #17 in the latest GolfStat ranking and will be trying to compete with the higher ranked teams as well as Florida Institute of Technology, U. of ColoradoColorado Springs, Western New Mexico, St. Mary’s U., Incarnate Word, Dallas Baptist, East Central and Northeastern.

“We are anxious to get started but preparation for the opening tournament has been difficult with only 5 days of weather good enough to get out and hit balls.  We could only get in 2 rounds in the past two weeks,” Coach Hrnciar said.  “We need at least 5 rounds of qualifying and 5 days of practice to get our short game to the point we could play in competition.

Cameron will start Cane Shumaker (Jr. ) from Miami, OK, Matt Trammel (Sr.) from Alliance, NE, Brett Leavell (Fr.) from Elgin, OK, Peter Svajlen (So.) from Bratisslava, Slovakia and Michael Lee (Fr.) from Oklahoma City, OK.  Coach Jerry Hrnciar stated, “Our goal is to try and stay focused for every shot we make in the entire tournament.  That will be hard to do because mental conditioning is no different than physical conditioning, it takes time to develop it and sustain it for a 36-hole day.  If we can do a decent job of that and eliminate holes that could be double bogeys or worse, then I can live with that and we can finish in a good position.”

Cameron’s other concern is the number of highly ranked teams in their region.  Besides St. Edward’s, ACU, Barry and UCO, they have #3 Florida Gulf Coast, #4 Florida Southern, #7 West Florida, #8 Nova Southeastern and #18 Lynn all competing for 5 spots to the National Tournament in May.
