Ags go winless at WTAMU Invite

CANYON, Texas (February 24) – The Aggie softball (4-12) team visited Texas over the weekend to take part in the West Texas A&M Invitational softball tournament hoping to extend their three-game winning streak. Unfortunately, the Aggies left Canyon winless. Cameron went 0-2 during Friday’s opening round, losing to Oklahoma City University 12-7, and West Texas A&M 10-8. Saturday’s slate of games was cancelled due to snow and wind.

“I’m upset with our defense because we made too many errors and gave up too many runs,” Head Coach Richie Nye said. “Our pitching was okay but not as good as it should have been and we couldn’t make the big pitch. Offensively I’m pleased and couldn’t ask for too much more. Usually scoring fifteen runs in two games is good enough to win at least one.”

The Aggies returned home with their second plaque of the season after being awarded first place in the Bronze Bracket. Despite going winless at the event, Cameron’s first place finish was awarded due to their fifteen total runs. So far this season the Aggies have received hardware from both of their tournaments.

In the first game Cameron started off to an early 2-0 lead. A huge six-run fourth inning by OKCU turned the game around and gave the Stars a lead they would never relinquish. The Aggies committed a total of 4 errors.

OKCU went an unbelievable 53-7 last year and is currently the No. 4 ranked NAIA softball program in the nation.

Senior shortstop Stephanie Bour continued her impressive season going 2-4 with an RBI against the Stars. She hit a towering home run in bottom of the first inning to kick things off for the Ags.

“Stephanie (Bour) continued to hit well and had a pretty good weekend. She is seeing the ball great,” Coach Nye said. “She is a very smart player that I enjoy coaching. I don’t have to keep telling her things over and over which is what you expect from your seniors.”

Junior outfielder Sammi Adams also had an impressive game after going 2-3 with two base hits.

The second game found the Aggies in a hole right from the start. Cameron was down 3-2 at the end of the third inning and was behind 10-3 after WTAMU finished their at-bats in the sixth inning.

Bour had a great second game as well going a perfect 4-4 from the plate with a double and an RBI. She finished the weekend with a .750 batting average in the two games and is hitting a ridiculous .553 on the season.

Freshman third baseman Courtney Clifford also had a perfect game at the plate, finishing 3-3 with a team-high 2 RBI. She was also hit by a pitch and finished the game with a perfect on-base percentage in her four at-bats.

Like their game against OKCU, Cameron committed four costly errors in their loss to WTAMU.

Cameron stays home this week to host Southeastern Oklahoma State in their season home-opener next Saturday, March 3rd, at 1:00pm at Cameron Field.
