Women's golf rattles way to 5th place finish

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (February 28) – In yet another move that helps to establish the young Cameron Women’s Golf team as a premier golf program, the Aggie women’s golf team finished fifth out of eighteen teams at the St. Mary’s Rattler Roundup invitational golf tournament in San Antonio, Texas yesterday. Cameron beat out a number of other teams on their way to a top-five finish with a combined two-round score of 664.

“We threw away a lot of shots but I’m still real pleased considering this is our first tournament of the season,” Head Coach Rick Goodwin said. “I’m pleased we got better after the first round. All and all this gets us off and going.”

The Aggies were in seventh place with a combined score of 336 after Monday’s first round, but stepped up their play to shoot a final round score of 328 on Tuesday. They defeated four other LSC teams in the process.

“I am very pleased to see where we are this year, compared to last year. We are a whole lot better than we were at this time last year and need to build off of everything we have done so far,” Coach Goodwin said. “We have got better players and have gotten more experience.”

Senior Janel Bailey led the Aggies on the first day by shooting a team-best 80, but slipped a bit to shoot an 82 on the second day. She and sophomore Renee Breeze tied for a team-high total score of 162 after the two rounds, good enough for twelfth overall. Breeze’s second-round score of 78 was in the top ten of all players.

“Janel (Bailey) is the x-factor on our team and really helps out the lineup,” Coach Goodwin said. “Renee (Breeze) played really strong and also helped us a lot.”

Sophomore Lauren Gonzales had a strong tournament finishing with a two-round score of 168. Her scores of 86 and 82 tied her for No. 31 overall.

The Madden Sisters, seniors Laura and Jennifer, rounded out the scores by shooting 172 (86-86) and 185 (89-96), respectively.

The event was won by St. Edwards University with a total team score of 636. St. Eds’ Emily Kvinta won the individual title after shooting a two-round score of 150 (72-78).

St. Mary’s University, the host school, finished their tournament in a tie for sixth place and a total team score of 665.

The Aggie women’s golf team travels back to the Lone Star State this weekend to take part in the St. Edwards Invitational at the Golf Club at Circle C in Austin, Texas. First round play is scheduled for Monday, with the second round coming on Tuesday.
