CU splits second dip with MSU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (March 22) – Looking for a repeat performance of Tuesday’s sweep, the Cameron Aggie softball team (14-18, 7-5 LSC) traveled south today to take on Midwestern State (23-11, 7-5 LSC) in the second half of their home-and-home series. Unfortunately the Ags were only able to come away with a single win. CU won the first game in extra innings 3-2, but lost the second in the sixth inning, 8-7.

“I’m very pleased with how we hit the ball,” Head Coach Richie Nye said. “We scored a lot of runs again so offensively we are doing things right. We had our chances though; we should have had the second game.”

In the first game the Aggies were leading 2-0 after a strong third inning. Junior designated hitter Melissa Bour doubled to bring in senior shortstop Stephanie Bour, who had doubled to bring in junior centerfielder Sammi Adams.

Adams went 0-2 in the game with a strikeout, but was able to get on base and eventually score after getting walked in the third inning. Melissa Bour finished the game after a solid 2-3 outing with a team-high two RBI and two doubles.

Stephanie Bour went just 1-1 with an RBI double, and was intentionally walked three times in the game. On the day, Bour was intentionally walked an absurd seven times.

“Melissa’s double (in the third inning) was huge,” Coach Nye said. “Stephanie did well with her only at-bat, but they just didn’t want to pitch to her.”

Cameron’s winning run came courtesy of Melissa Bour’s second double in the top of the eighth inning which brought in Stephanie Bour.

Senior pitcher Amanda Hibbs was awarded the win after going all eight innings and giving up just two runs on six hits. She faced 31 batters and walked two.

In the second game Cameron found themselves down 3-0 after just the first inning. The Aggies and Mustangs battled back and forth, forcing four lead changes until MSU won it in the bottom of the sixth inning.

“We had a few poor defensive plays but still fought back and took the lead,” Coach Nye said. “We just gave it up on a big hit. We had our chance but couldn’t close the deal.”

Freshman pitcher Ashton McBride started the game but only went four innings after giving up five runs on six hits. She also walked four. Hibbs entered the game in the fifth and was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs, including the game-winning run, on five hits.

Junior leftfielder Whitney Richardson had a great game as she went 2-3 with a team-high 2 RBI. She struck out once and had a huge two-run homer in the second inning.

Adams also went yard in the game, with a monstrous solo homerun in the third inning. She finished the game 1-3 with a strikeout and an RBI.

“We did our job but I’m disappointed we couldn’t win both games,” Coach Nye said. “We are sitting pretty well in conference, and as long as we beat teams we are supposed to beat we will be alright.”

The Aggies are on the road this Saturday to take on Southwestern Oklahoma State at 1:00pm and 3:00pm. They return home next Tuesday, March 27 to host the Bulldogs in the second-half of their season series. These games also begin at 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
