CU Softball sweeps SWOSU on road

WEATHERFORD, Oklahoma (March 24) – The Cameron Aggie softball team (16-18, 9-5 LSC) swept the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs (13-15, 5-7 LSC) in Weatherford on Saturday, winning the first game 12-5 and the second 7-5. CU has now won eight of their last ten games and is one of the hottest teams in the Lone Star Conference.

“We are definitely doing things right as a team,” Head Coach Richie Nye said. “Things really came together today. We really hit the ball well and really cut down on the errors.”

The Aggies recorded an incredible twenty-eight hits and just one error in the double-header.

Cameron was actually behind for a few innings in the first game, but a homerun by freshman catcher Callie Schlatter in the top of the fourth tied the game. A three-run fifth inning put the Aggies up for good. Schlatter finished the game after going 3-5 from the plate with two RBI, a double, and a strikeout.

Senior pitcher Amanda Hibbs was awarded the win after going six innings and giving up just a single run on four hits. She also struck out four and walked four.

Freshman secondbaseman Courtney Clifford also homered in the game for the Aggies, knocking one over the fence in the top of the sixth. She finished the game 2-3 with an RBI and strikeout.

“We hit the ball extremely well today,” Coach Nye said. “I’m very happy with our offense.”

The Aggies carried their strong offensive performance into the second game, putting up a quick three runs in the first inning. The team recorded three runs on five hits before ever giving up an out.

Cameron went up 5-1, but the Bulldogs tied the game with a huge fourth inning. It took the Aggies until the top of the seventh when a two-run single by sophomore Megan Young gave the Aggies the game. Young finished the game 3-5 with a team-high two RBI. She also struck out once.

“If I could change anything in the (second) game, I wish we hadn’t left so many runners on base,” Coach Nye said. Cameron stranded 12 runners in the game, nearly two an inning.

Freshman pitcher Ashton McBride pitched a complete game for the win, giving up five runs on ten hits, with only two earned runs. She also struck out three and walked two after facing 33 batters.

Senior shortstop Stephanie Bour had a perfect game at the plate, going 4-4 with an RBI and a walk. She also recorded an incredible three doubles and a stolen base.

Courtney Clifford and Callie Schlatter were the only other Aggies to finish the game with more than one hit. Both players finished the game after going 2-4 with a strikeout.

“I am proud of our girls,” Coach Nye said. “We just need to keep doing what we’re doing.”

The Aggies host the SWOSU Bulldogs for the second half of their season series this Tuesday, March 27th at Cameron Field. The double-header begins at 1:00pm.
