Aggie Baseball splits with Redmen

TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma (March 28) – Lone Star Conference play opened up for the Aggie baseball team (14-17, 1-1 LSC) this afternoon as they traveled east to take on the Northeastern State Redmen (15-14, 1-1 LSC). The Aggies had lost four of their last six games and were looking to get on a roll going into conference play. Although they didn’t get the sweep, CU was able to come away with one win. They dropped the first game 12-3 and won the second 5-4.

”We played alright but still made some mistakes,” Head Coach Todd Holland said. “To go on the road and split with another LSC North team is always good. Hopefully we can win every game when they come here.”

Game one saw the Aggies jump out to an early 2-1 lead, but a four-run third inning and a five-run fourth inning put the Redmen ahead for good. Cameron was held to just four hits in the game and committed two errors.

Junior Bevon Anderson started the game for the Aggies but was awarded the loss after giving up eight runs on ten hits. He lasted just three innings and faced 20 batters.

Sophomore Corey Clowers gave up the remaining four runs on four hits. He went two innings and gave up three walks.

Cameron’s three runs came courtesy of seniors Blake Hughes (shortstop) and Ryan Whiteley (leftfielder). Hughes finished the game 1-2 with an RBI, a walk, a strikeout, and a homerun. Whiteley finished the game 1-3 with a team-high two RBI.

In the nightcap the Aggies again found themselves down early, but were able to take the lead in the third inning thanks to a two-run bomb by Whiteley. He went 2-3 in the game and recorded a team-high three RBI. He also had a double and a walk.

Cameron put up another three runs in the top of the sixth, but nearly gave it away in the bottom half of the inning. The Redmen scored three runs before recording an out, forcing Coach Holland to make a pitching change.

Senior Ryan Totte started the game and went a strong five innings allowing just four runs on six hits. He also walked one and struck out two.

Senior closer Ryan Bengert entered the game in the sixth inning and recorded his fourth save of the season. He allowed no runs and no hits in his two innings of work. He also struck out one.

“(Ryan) Totte threw a great game and really kept their hitters off balance,” Coach Holland said. “We tried to let them back in it but (Ryan) Bengert shut them down.”

The Aggies doubled their hit total from the first game, recording eight in the nightcap. Senior shortstop B.J. Cole had a great game at the plate going 2-3 with an RBI and a walk.

He and junior firstbaseman Josh Mathiesen were responsible for Cameron’s other two RBI. Mathiesen hit a solo homerun late in the game and finished the day 1-3 with his one RBI. He was also walked once.

The Aggies stay home this weekend to host the East Central University Tigers. The teams play a double-header beginning at 1:00pm on Saturday, and play one nine-inning game at 2:00pm on Sunday.

Saturday is also the annual installment of Aggie Baseball’s “Pack the Stands” game which is the most attended game of the season. Tell your friends, family, classmates, and coworkers to come out and “Pack the Stands” in support of your Aggie baseball team.
