CU takes 3rd at Subway Invite
AMARILLO, Texas (April 3) – In their best finish of the 2007 season, the Cameron Aggie women’s golf team took 3rd place at the West Texas A&M/Subway Invitational golf tournament this week. A total of eleven teams that included the likes of Western New Mexico and Central Oklahoma matched up at Tacosa Country Club in Amarillo. The Aggies were in 2nd place overall after the first day and finished the tournament with a combined team score of 650 (325-325). Central Oklahoma won the event after shooting 636.
“We were able to place in the top three and got another award, but you can always get better,” Head Coach Rick Goodwin said. “I’m very pleased with how far we have come and how much better we are at this point of the season than we were last year.”
Senior Janel Bailey and sophomore Renee Breeze finished in a tie for 3rd place overall after recording a 158. Breeze shot a 78 on the first day and 80 on the second. Bailey shot an 81 in the first round, including a 46 on just the front nine, but rebounded to finish with a 77 in the second round.
“Janel (Bailey) could have folded up her tent after the first day, but she wouldn’t give up,” Coach Goodwin said. “That shows her experience and is pretty impressive.”
Senior Laura Madden was the only other Aggie to finish in the top ten overall, ending the second round in 9th place. She finished the event with a total score of 162 (81-81).
Sophomore Lauren Gonzales and freshman Anna Hataway also competed for the Aggies, coming in 25th and 36th place, respectively. Gonzales finished with a 172 (85-87) while Hataway came in with a 180 (90-90).
“I’m pretty much pleased with how we did,” Coach Goodwin said. “It was very windy but we talked about hanging in there and doing the best you can do. Western New Mexico caught up to us and was impressive so you can’t be too upset.”
Senior Jennifer Madden also competed in the event, but as an independent. She finished in 37th place after shooting a 181 (94-87).
“We held our own but couldn’t hold second place,” Coach Goodwin said. “We hated to lose a spot, but it was more like they came and got it more than we lost it. We played well and are moving up the ladder.”
The Aggie women’s golf team travels to Norman next weekend to take part in the University of Oklahoma Susie Maxwell Berning Classic. The event runs from April 7-9 and will be played at Jimmy Austin University of Oklahoma Golf Course. Some of the best women’s golf programs, in both NCAA Division I and II, will be competing in the event.
