Ags keep rolling with sweep of Storm

LAWTON, Oklahoma (April 4) – The Cameron Aggie Baseball team (18-18, 5-2 LSC) hosted the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm (16-21, 2-5 LSC) at McCord Field this afternoon with hopes of getting back to .500 on the season. CU’s sweep of the Storm certainly did the trick as the Aggies recorded their 17th and 18th wins behind stellar pitching and hot hitting. Cameron won the first game 10-1, and came from behind to take the second game 7-3.

“This is exactly what we needed to do,” Head Coach Todd Holland said. “We needed to get hot going into conference and now we have won four in a row. To hit like we did and to also have two complete games by our pitchers is phenomenal.”

The Aggies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to some consistent hitting. A four-run third inning put the Ags ahead for good. Cameron failed to score a run in just two of the seven innings.

Junior Bevon Anderson got the start for the Aggies and pitched a complete game for the win. He allowed just a single run on five hits after facing twenty-six batters. Anderson also struck out five.

“Bevon (Anderson) threw real well today,” Coach Holland said. “We had a couple of errors but as long as we try to limit those we will be fine.” The Aggies had three errors on the day.

Junior firstbaseman Josh Mathiesen had the best game at the plate for the Aggies after going 3-4 with a team-high three RBI. He also struck out once.

The Aggies finished with ten hits on the game, with only one going for extra bases. Senior shortstop B. J. Cole hit a double in the sixth inning and went 2-3 with a team-high four runs. He also walked once.

In the nightcap the Aggies were down for the majority of the game which started out as a pitcher’s duel. Although the Aggies scored a run in the first inning, they were down 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth. Five consecutive runs on two outs put the Aggies ahead for good.

“I was really pleased that we were able to fight back,” Coach Holland said. “We didn’t care what the scoreboard said; we knew we were going to win.”

Senior Ryan Totte started the game for Cameron and also pitched a complete game for the win. He gave up three runs on nine hits after facing thirty-one batters. He also recorded one walk and one strikeout.

Mathiesen and junior designated hitter Jorey Price both had multi-RBI games for the Aggies with two and three, respectively. Mathiesen went 1-3 with a double and a walk. Price finished 1-2 with a team-high three RBI and a walk.

Cole added another double on the day in the bottom of the fourth inning. He went a perfect 2-2 at the plate with a run and a walk.

The Aggies travel to Weatherford this weekend to take on the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs on April 6th and 7th. Their next home contest comes on the final Wednesday afternoon double-header of the season next week. The Aggies host the Central Oklahoma Bronchos on April 11th at 2:00pm.
