CU sends 2 to Ray Vaughn Classic
OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (April 7) – The Cameron Cross Country team sent two runners to compete in the Ray Vaughn Classic over the weekend, a track and field event hosted by Oklahoma Christian University. Although Cameron University does not have a true track and field team, members of the Aggie Cross Country team can still compete in various open track meets as individuals.
“It was very windy and very cold,” Head Coach Matt Aguero said. “The weather played a big part in the final times, but both of our guys still ran very well.”
Freshman Guy Narcomey was one of the two Aggie runners to compete in the meet. Narcomey ran in the 1500-meter race and took 20th place out of twenty-five runners. His time of 4:45.24 was a new personal best, beating his old record by more than three seconds. Jordan Powell from Oklahoma Christian won the race with a time of 3:56.74.
Coach Aguero was quick to recognize Narcomey’s impressive improvement. “(Guy) Narcomey’s times are continually coming down and he is showing great strides. A three-second improvement may not seem like a lot, but it is actually very remarkable.”
Freshman Ben Ware was the other Cameron runner participating in the meet. Ware competed in the 5000-meter race and finished in 5th place out of ten runners. He finished with a time of 16:24.59, which was just forty-nine seconds behind first-place finisher Kenneth Bowling (Oklahoma Christian).
“I was very pleased with how Ben (Ware) ran,” Coach Aguero said. “He really picked up the pace and was able to beat out half of his competition which is always great.”
The Aggies next compete on April 14th in the John Jacobs Open track meet in Norman, Oklahoma. The event is sponsored by the University of Oklahoma. The Aggies have just two meets remaining in the 2007 season and will finish their season in Texas with the TCU Invitational (April 21) in Fort Worth and the Rice Twilight (April 26) in Houston.
