Ags run with Big Dogs at OU

NORMAN, Oklahoma (April 10) – The Cameron Aggie women’s golf team traveled north to compete in the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic, hosted by the University of Oklahoma. Eighteen of the premier Division I and II schools from around the nation competed in the event, including the likes of OU, the University of Wisconsin, Texas Tech, Baylor, and many others. The Aggies came in 18th place, but shot one of their better team scores of the season.

“It was a great experience for us,” Head Coach Rick Goodwin said. “We can’t thank them enough for letting us play in the tournament because it was great for the kids. It was really cold and windy but you have to be pleased with how our team played.”

The Aggies finished with an overall score of 959 (310-321-328), 95 shots behind eventual winner Baylor University who finished with a score of 860 (282-287-291). Cameron’s average round score going into the tournament was 325.

“We just tried to enjoy the experience but if we can shoot 310 and under then we are going to be really good,” Coach Goodwin said. “A 310 is what it takes to compete in our league, and anything under that is really good.”

The tournament was also structured to play 36 holes on the first day and 18 on the second, which is something Cameron had yet to do all season.

“Playing in this tournament is such a great way to lead into the conference tournament,” Coach Goodwin said. “Just for us to be out there with the Division I schools lets us learn and see what it is all about.”

The final scores for the Aggie women’s golf team are as follows:

T-69th Place - Renee Breeze – 74-75-85--234

T-83th Place - Laura Madden – 76-78-84--238

88th Place - Janel Bailey – 77-84-79--240

105th Place - Krystle McCorgary – 83-84-84--251

106th Place - Lauren Gonzales – 86-87-81--254

A total of 108 golfers competed in the tournament.

“I am very proud of how our girls played and how they handled themselves out there,” Coach Goodwin said. “Playing in a tournament like this is tough, but it can also be a lot of fun.”

The Aggie women’s golf team accompanies the men’s golf team this weekend to compete in the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament. The event will be played at the Bear Creek Golf Club in Dallas, Texas. The event will be scored live so stay tuned to goaggies.cameron.edu as well as lonestarconference.org for the latest scores.
