CU Women's Golf signs LHS product and Texas standout
LAWTON, Oklahoma (April 13) – Cameron head women’s golf coach Rick Goodwin announced the addition of two golfers this morning, just two days after receiving their commitments on National Signing Day. Megan Whan, a local Lawton athlete, joins the Aggies directly from Lawton High School where she played as a member of the Wolverines. Joining Whan is standout Blaze Petty who is one of the top female golfers in the Lone Star State. Both girls are officially signed with Cameron and will begin competition in the fall.
“Megan (Whan) signing with us will continue the Lawton High connection and I am very pleased to have another local addition to the team,” Goodwin said. “Her game has gotten consistently better over the last three years and she will bring a lot of enthusiasm to our team. (Blaze) Petty’s golf talent is obviously there and I think she has the potential to be a tremendous player for us.”
Whan’s signing will also reunite her with former teammate Renee Breeze who is a sophomore on the Aggie women’s golf team. Currently there are four former-LHS female golfers playing for Cameron: senior Laura Madden, senior Jennifer Madden, senior Lauren Gonzales, and Breeze.
While at LHS, Whan was a standout in both golf and softball and lettered in each three times and one time, respectively. She was also named to the Southern All-Conference golf team and was given the Dr. Green Award for Girls Golf this season.
Whan is also a gifted student in the classroom. While at LHS she received numerous academic awards, including the Renaissance Academic Achievement Medal, the United States Achievement Academy National Leadership Merit Award, and the Citizenship, Scholarship, and Attendance Award. She also was named to the National Honor Roll, Principal’s Honor Roll, and Oklahoma Honor Society.
“I am very excited to have her (Whan) in the program,” Goodwin said. “She will be a great addition to our team, and with her high academic standards she will help us to maintain the GPA we expect of our golfers. She is definitely the type of player I am looking for.”
Petty on the other hand comes to Cameron from Joshua High School (Joshua, Texas) where she competes as the team’s top golfer. She finished in 5th place overall in last week’s District Championship, and is currently headed to the Regional Championship tournament next week.
“Blaze will be a great asset to our young program,” Goodwin said. “When she sent me a DVD of her playing, I was very impressed with her swing and especially with her short game.”
Besides lettering each of her four years at Joshua High, Petty was named to the All-District Second Team in both 2005 and 2006, and the All-District First Team in 2007. She also finished third at the recent MVCC Invitational, and placed first at the JHS Invitational.
“She will make a great Aggie,” he said. “I enjoyed meeting with her parents and really believe that there is great chemistry between her family and our program.”
Petty is also very talented in the classroom as she was named to her school’s A-Honor Roll each of four years at JHS. She also finished in the Top 15% of her class and was named to the National Honor Society each of her final three years.
These two signings will help to replenish an Aggie golf team that is losing four players this offseason due to their senior status. The Aggie Women’s Golf program is in its second year of existence.
“This begins a new era in Cameron women’s golf,” Goodwin said. “We have lost or are losing most of our initial group and need to start over again. I am excited to keep our tradition going, as small as it is. Our program is up and coming, we have things to build on, and now we have two new kids to help us take it further.”
In other women’s golf news, the Aggies were ranked No. 7 in the latest NCAA Division II West Regional rankings. The top six teams in the region are invited to play in the NCAA Super Regionals later this month.
Both the men’s and women’s Aggie golf teams next travel south to Dallas, Texas to take part in the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament this weekend. The event will be played at Bear Creek Golf Club.
Expect further signings from each of the Cameron Athletic programs in the coming days.
