Ags split with Bronchos, Boren nets 6 RBI

LAWTON, Oklahoma (April 15) – Looking to rebound from being swept by UCO on Tuesday, the Aggie softball team (18-23, 11-9 LSC) hosted the Bronchos (22-9, 12-4 LSC) for a second double-header this afternoon at Cameron Field. This time the Aggies were able to come away with a win, splitting the double dip. UCO won the first game in extra innings 14-12, but Cameron rebounded to take the nightcap 8-4.

“I’m pleased with how we played today,” Head Coach Richie Nye said. “We played well enough to win both games but just couldn’t finish out the first one. UCO is a great team and we played them really tough.”

The game went back and forth and featured four lead changes. There were also a total of thirty-five hits in the game (CU 11, UCO 14) and four huge homeruns.

Sophomore outfielder Jenna Boren hit one of the aforementioned homeruns, a three-run dinger, and had a huge day at the plate. She came in the game in the fourth inning and went 1-3 with a team-high three RBI. She also struck out twice.

Junior leftfielder Whitney Richardson also homered in the game, hitting a huge bomb in the bottom of the third. She finished the game 1-5 with an RBI and a strikeout.

“We had opportunities to win it,” Coach Nye said. “It would have been nice to sweep the first-place team (UCO) at home. Now we need to keep our focus on continuing to win so that we can make the postseason.”

Senior pitcher Amanda Hibbs started the game for Cameron, but went just 4.2 innings after giving up twelve runs on nine hits. She faced thirty batters, striking out one and walking five. Freshman Sherry Tetreault came in the game in relief and went the final 3.1 innings. She gave up two runs on five hits and faced a total of sixteen batters. Tetreault also walked two.

In the second game the Aggies were down 2-1 early, but tied it up at 4-4 after the third inning. A four-run fourth inning gave the Aggies the lead and ultimately the game.

“It shows a lot about our team that we came back to win the second game,” Coach Nye said. “We didn’t let what happened in the first game get us down, we just stayed after it.”

Freshman pitcher Ashton McBride got the start and went the distance for Cameron, giving up four runs on eight hits. She ended up facing thirty-one batters and recorded two strikeouts and two walks.

Jenna Boren hit another three-run homerun in the game, giving her two on the day. She finished 2-3 with three RBI. Boren also walked once and struck out once.

“Jenna (Boren) had a hot bat today,” Coach Nye said. “It was good to see her have such a good day at the plate. They kept throwing different things at her and she kept making contact.”

Junior third-baseman Melissa Bour had a huge day offensively, recording a team-high four RBI after going a flawless 3-3 at the plate. She also walked once to finish with a perfect on-base percentage. Her homerun in the fourth inning helped to put away the Bronchos for good.

Senior first-baseman Amista Melvin also went yard in the game, finishing 1-3 with an RBI and her solo homerun.

“We just need to keep our heads up,” Coach Nye said. “We have a good opportunity to get back on track with four home games this week, so we need to make the most of it.”

The Aggies stay home this week to host the East Central University Lady Reds on Tuesday, April 17th. The double-header between the teams is scheduled to begin at 1:00pm at Cameron Field.

Cameron also hosts Panhandle State University on Thursday, April 19th. This double-header will also begin at 1:00pm at Cameron Field.
