Cameron announces Fall 2015 honor lists

Cameron University has announced the President’s and Dean’s honor lists for the Fall 2015 semester. To make the President’s List, undergraduate students must be enrolled full-time (carrying at least 12 hours of classes) and maintain a straight A average (4.0). The Dean’s List requires a B average (3.00-3.99).

CU@SC: Cameron University Department of Art Annual Student Art Exhibition 2016 set for Simmons Center

The CU@SC series returns to the Simmons Center with the Cameron University Department of Art Annual Student Art Exhibition beginning on Thursday, February 11. The exhibition will open at 6 p.m. with a gallery talk at 6:30 p.m. and a reception for the artists at 7 p.m.

Cameron University New Music Festival to feature free concert by film composer Craig Richey

Film score composer Craig Richey will headline Cameron University’s New Music Festival, presented by the CU Department of Music, on Tuesday February 9, at 7:30 p.m. The concert takes place in the McCutcheon Recital Hall, located in the Music Building of the Louise D. McMahon Fine Arts Complex and is open to the public at no charge. Cameron’s New Music Festival is made possible by Cameron University Lectures and Concerts Series.

Cameron University music students named to Oklahoma Intercollegiate Honors Band

Six Cameron University students were named to the Oklahoma Intercollegiate Honor Band by the Oklahoma Music Educators Association (OMEA). Mariama Abramson and Derik Daubenspeck, Cache; Braden Hatch and Kenneth Williams, Lawton; Gus Echols, Duncan; and Tyler Reeves, Denton, Texas, were honored with selection to the prestigious group. They joined more than 100 students from colleges and universities throughout Oklahoma to perform at OMEA’s annual winter conference in late January.

Cameron’s 19th Annual Red River Expo prepares job seekers for success

Cameron University’s Office of Career Services presents the 19th Annual Red River Career Expo, an event which provides an opportunity for all students, military personnel and residents of southwest Oklahoma to meet with national, regional and local employers. A wide-range of career fields, including health care, telecommunications, marketing, engineering, information technology, sales and more, will be represented. The Red River Career Expo takes place on Thursday, February 18, 2016 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Aggie Rec Center. The event is open to the public at no charge.

It’s “Game On!” for Cameron University Homecoming 2016

It’s “Game On” for Cameron University alumni, friends and supporters who will gather on the CU campus for the university’s Homecoming 2016 celebration. On Friday, February 19, and Saturday, February 20, alumni and visitors can experience a variety of Cameron homecoming traditions, including the Homecoming Chuck Wagon Cook-off and Tailgate Party, men’s and women’s basketball games, the seventh annual Aggie Family Fun Run, presentation of the annual Cameron University Alumni Association Awards, the annual Athletics Hall of Fame banquet and a new event, Family Fun in the ARC. Aggie Homecoming activities kick off on Monday, February 15 with a variety of activities and events for CU students. Cameron University announces housing, board rates for 2016-17

Following approval earlier today by the University of Oklahoma, Cameron University and Rogers State University Board of Regents, Cameron University has set housing and board rates for the 2016-17 academic year. Housing rates will remain unchanged while the new board rates are effective August 1, 2016.

Cameron University Foundation establishes Davis Family Endowed Lectureship

Following approval by the University of Oklahoma, Cameron University and Rogers State University Board of Regents earlier today, the Cameron University Foundation has established the Davis Family Endowed Lectureship in Communication. The endowment is made possible thanks to a gift from the Don C. Davis family and the Brewer Trust. Cameron will now seek matching funds from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education for this endowment.

Public invited to Lawton-Fort Sill ceremony proclaiming African-American Heritage Month

Members of the public are invited to the annual ceremony kicking off African-American Heritage Month in the Lawton-Fort Sill community. Cameron University will host the ceremony on Monday, February 1 at 6 p.m. in the CETES Conference Center. Following remarks by guest speaker Dr. Marco Columbus, Associate Professor of Education, Mayor Fred Fitch will sign the official proclamation declaring February 2016 as African-American Heritage Month (also known as Black History Month).

Cameron University’s Dr. Ioannis Argyros publishes new mathematics textbook

Cameron University’s Dr. Ioannis Argyros, professor of mathematical sciences, is the co-author of a new mathematics textbook, “Intelligent Numerical Methods: Applications to Fractional Calculus.” The 422-page volume has been published by Springer Verlag as part of the Studies in Computational Intelligence series. Argyros co-authored the book with Dr. Dr. George A. Anastassiou from the University of Memphis.

Cameron University to hold auditions for musical theatre production, “The Pajama Game”

The Cameron University Departments of Theatre Arts and Music will continue its season of “Celebrating the Magic of the Classics!” with auditions for the musical comedy, “The Pajama Game.” Auditions will be held on Sunday, February 7, at 2 p.m. and on Monday, February 8, at 7 p.m. in the University Theatre. Those auditioning should bring a memorized song from a Broadway musical along with the appropriate sheet music or an accompanying cd without vocals. Numerous roles are available.

Cameron University American Marketing Association to present “Marketing Your Business on a Small Budget” workshop

The Cameron University American Marketing Association, a student organization, is pleased to present “Market Your Business on a Small Budget” on Tuesday, February 9 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The presentation will be made by Dr. Theresa Billiot, assistant professor of marketing in the CU School of Business and will include information on increasing sales on a small marketing budget, with tips designed for businesses of any size. The cost to attend is $25; payment will be accepted on-site. Seating is limited, so attendees are asked to pre-register online at http://www.cameron.edu/business/american-marketing-association.

CU Alumni Association announces CUAA Award honorees

The Cameron University Alumni Association is pleased to announce the winners of its 2016 Distinguished Alumni, Outstanding Young Alumni and Faculty Hall of Fame Awards, which will be presented during the university’s homecoming festivities. Brad Burgess, Cheryl Tate and Emmit Tayloe will receive Distinguished Alumni Awards; Jennifer Holland and T.W. Shannon have been named Outstanding Young Alumni; and Dr. Lance Janda and Dr. Christopher O. Keller will be inducted into the Cameron University Faculty Hall of Fame. The awards will be presented during the Aggie Family & Friends Awards Lunch on Saturday, February 20 in the McCasland Ballroom. The ceremony starts at Noon and is open to the public. Tickets are $15 and can be reserved online at www.cameron.edu/homecoming.

Cameron University offers job shadow experience for students

Cameron University is offering community employers a unique opportunity to help students experience an up-close look at a “day in the life” of a professional during the 8th Annual CU Take an Aggie to Work Job Shadow Program, scheduled for February 1-5. Through the job shadow experience, students will have the opportunity to spend a day in a relevant work setting in order to observe, ask questions, and gain career-related knowledge that extends their learning beyond the classroom. As a “shadow,” students can also learn more about job requirements, employer expectations and professionalism.

Deadline approaches for priority consideration for Cameron University scholarships

The deadline for priority consideration for a Cameron University institutional scholarship is Monday, February 1. Cameron University has millions of dollars in scholarships and tuition waivers to award for the 2016-17 academic year, many of which are awarded to multiple recipients. Scholarships are available for new and current students, as well as transfer students. Students who wish to be considered for all institutional scholarships for which they are eligible must complete the General Scholarship Application found online at www.cameron.edu/scholarships. Future students should complete the Application for Admission prior to applying for scholarships at www.cameron.edu/apply.

Feature film by Cameron University’s Dr. Matt Jenkins to premiere at Trail Dance Film Festival

“Veda,” a feature-length movie written and co-produced by Cameron University’s Dr. Matt Jenkins, will premiere at the 10th Annual Trail Dance Film Festival in Duncan. The 63-minute film has been named an Official Selection for the festival. “Veda” will be screened Friday, January 29 at 9 p.m. at the Simmons Center in Duncan.

Film by Cameron University professor selected for two film festivals

“My Girlfriend,” a short film by Cameron University’s Dejan Mraović, Assistant Professor of Art, continues to find success on the film festival circuit. The film was one of only 48 movies chosen as an Official Selection of the 8th Liverpool International Film Festival which took place in December, and has also been announced as an Official Selection for the 10th Annual Trail Dance Film Festival in Duncan. The Trail Dance screening is slated for Friday, January 29, in Chisholm Hall of the Simmons Center. “My Girlfriend” will be screened at 6:30 p.m.

Cameron University’s Hyunsoon Whang to present piano recital featuring works by Chopin and Beethoven

Cameron University’s Hyunsoon Whang, McMahon Endowed Chair and Professor of Music, will present “Nocturnes and Fantasies,” a piano recital, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 21, in the Cameron University Theatre. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for senior citizens, military and students. CU faculty, staff and students are admitted at no charge with CU-ID.

Cameron University Department of Mathematical Sciences awarded $3,000 grant to participate in “Preparation for Industrial Career in Mathematical Sciences (PIC Math)”

The Cameron University Department of Mathematical Sciences has been awarded a $3,000 grant from the National Science Foundation/Mathematical Association of America (MAA) that will allow Cameron math, chemistry, biology, engineering and computing and technology students to participate in MAA’s PIC Math (Preparation for Industrial Careers in Mathematical Sciences) program. Cameron is one of only 49 universities across the county to be selected for participation in PIC Math, which prepares students for industrial careers by engaging them in research problems that come directly from business and industry.

Cameron student documentary named an official selection of Trail Dance Film Festival

The Cameron University student documentary “Street Art: More Than Graffiti” has been named as an official selection at the 10th Annual Trail Dance Film Festival in Duncan. The film will be screened on Friday, January 29 at 6:30 p.m. in Chisholm Hall of the Simmons Center.

Register to vote during Cameron University’s “Your Vote Counts” event

The Cameron University Department of History and Government and student organization Student Advocates for Political Action (SAPA) have a message for community members as well as Cameron students, faculty and staff: Your Vote Counts! Representatives from both organizations will host a voter registration drive from Monday, January 25 through Thursday, January 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the McMahon Centennial Complex.

Cameron University and CU-Duncan each earn designation as a Certified Healthy Campus

The Lawton campus of Cameron University has been awarded designation as a Certified Healthy Campus for the fifth consecutive year, and CU-Duncan has earned the designation for the second year in a row. Both designations are at the Excellence level, the highest level in the program. The designation is awarded by the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) in conjunction with the Oklahoma Academy, The State Chamber of Oklahoma, and the Oklahoma Turning Point Council. Certified Healthy Campus is a program of the “Shape Your Future” campaign which recognizes college campuses and vocational technical schools that make a positive impact on the health of their employees and students.

Cameron University’s Dr. Tony Wohlers co-authors textbook examining the usage of information technology with public administration

Cameron University staff member Dr. Tony E. Wohlers recently published his first book, “Setting Sail into the Age of Digital Local Government: Trends and Best Practices,” co-authored by Lynne Louise Bernier. The 123-page textbook examines the use of new information technology within public administration in advanced industrialized democracies and is the latest volume in Springer Science+Business Media’s Public Administration and Information Technology series.

Cameron University Foundation wraps up year with establishment of Dorothy Saltus Endowed Scholarship

The Cameron University Foundation closed out 2015 with the addition of an endowed scholarship, thanks to the generosity of donor Chris Saltus. His gift of $10,000 has resulted in the creation of the Dorothy Saltus Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship will benefit full-time Cameron students who have declared a major in a pre-nursing field.

Cameron University seeks volunteers for Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” In answer to that query, volunteers from Cameron University and the Lawton-Fort Sill community will participate in the national Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 18, 2016. CU officials are hoping to recruit over 400 volunteers for the event. To volunteer, register online at www.cameron.edu/mlkcelebration/dayofservice or call the Office of Student Activities at (580) 581-2217. The volunteers will work on community projects from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Additionally, the volunteer effort will include a supply drive on Saturday, January 16th. Donation boxes and supply wish lists will be available at WalMart on Quanah Parker, Country Mart on Lee, and Sam’s Club on Sheridan.

Cameron University honors Carey Johnson family with the Mary Lou and W. Carey Johnson Auditorium

The auditorium in Cameron University’s Cynthia S. Ross Hall, home to the School of Business, has been named the Mary Lou and W. Carey Johnson Auditorium in recognition of long-time Cameron supporters, the late Carey Johnson and his wife Mary Lou. The honor serves to acknowledge a gift of property the Johnson family made to the university in 1989. Mary Lou Johnson and sons Carey Johnson, Jr. and Chris Johnson were on hand to represent the Johnson family during the official dedication.

Cameron University Foundation surpasses goal of successful “Rise to the Challenge” campaign

The Cameron University Foundation’s Rise to the Challenge campaign, which sought to receive 300 gifts in a 30 day period in order to receive a $30,000 donation from an anonymous supporter, has raised $207,879, generating 449 gifts from November 16 through December 14. The original goal of 300 gifts was reached just 17 days into the campaign.

Cameron University students recognized by Oklahoma Academy of Science

Two Cameron University students were recognized for the quality of their research during the recent annual technical meeting of the Oklahoma Academy of Science. Jared Stokes received the award for Zoology – Outstanding Oral Presentation, and Jeein Yoon received the award for Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science – Outstanding Oral Presentation.

Cameron selected as a Top School in Military Advanced Education’s “2016 Guide to Colleges & Universities”

Cameron University has been selected as a Top School in Military Advanced Education’s (MAE) “2016 Guide to Colleges & Universities.” The guide will be released in the December issue of MAE and will also be available online at www.mae-kmi.com as a searchable database. The publication allows prospective students to evaluate higher education institutions on their best practices in military and veteran education.

Cameron University mathematics students receive travel grants for 2016 Joint Mathematics Meetings

Three Cameron University students have been selected to receive $250 travel grants by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). Ayush Joshi, James King and Brandon Payne, each of whom has had original research in mathematics accepted for oral presentation at the MAA Undergraduate Student Poster Session of the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM), will utilize the grants to defray travel costs to the January 2016 conference in Seattle, Wash.
