Cameron University students honored with creative writing awards

Cameron University students were recently honored for their creative writing at the Department of English and Foreign Languages’ banquet. The fiction, non-fiction, and poetry award winners will be published in “The Gold Mine,” Cameron’s literary arts magazine.

Cameron University Office of Student Support Services presents three freshmen with Outstanding Student Awards

Cameron University freshmen Johnathan Flint, Alicia Mitchell and Cher Whetsone were honored with the Outstanding Student Award during the 16th annual Leo Awards, presented by Cameron’s Office of Student Support Services (SSS). The award recognizes a student’s demonstrated commitment to his/her education by successfully completing all required remedial classes and using the SSS tutorial labs, maintaining a 2.5 or higher GPA, attending workshops to enhance educational opportunities, and overcoming personal, family, or financial obstacles to continue his/her education.

Cameron University to celebrate master’s graduates at annual hooding ceremony

Cameron University will honor students who have completed requirements for a master’s degree at the 12th annual CU Hooding Ceremony on Friday, May 6, at 3 p.m. Master’s candidates Amanda Alexander, Lawton, and Colby Meeks, San Angelo, Texas, will speak on behalf of this year’s slate of graduate recipients. The ceremony will take place in Aggie Gym. A reception for graduates and their guests will follow the ceremony in the CETES Conference Center.

Cameron University celebrates Earth Day with tree donation from Lawton Northeast On-Line Branch Lions Club

Cameron University celebrated Earth Day with a tree planting made possible by the Lawton Northeast On-Line Branch Lions Club, a branch of the Lawton Northeast Lions Club. This marks the eighth consecutive year the group has donated a tree to the university. Allen Granger, president of the Lawton Northeast On-Line Branch Lions Club, and members of the club were on hand to celebrate the planting of two Eastern Redbuds on the south side of Cameron’s Aggie Gym.

Safety and inclement weather outlined for Cameron Commencement

Cameron University’s annual Commencement is scheduled for Friday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m. at Cameron Stadium. Cameron alumnus Gary Jones, Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspector, will deliver the Commencement address. Cameron officials encourage graduates, their families and friends, and all visitors to arrive at least 30 minutes early to facilitate a seamless entry into the stadium. Gates open at 6 p.m. Ample parking is available on campus. Chilled water will be available free of charge.

Cameron University Office of Campus Life presents annual awards

Cameron University’s Office of Campus Life presented awards to students, faculty and staff during a recent ceremony on the CU campus. The event included the announcement of the Top 20 Students, comprised of outstanding juniors and seniors, and the Top 10 Non-Traditional Students, made up of outstanding college students over the age of 25. A committee of faculty, staff and students selects honorees for both lists based on excellence in leadership, community service, campus involvement and academics.

Cameron students named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities

More than 55 students from Cameron University have been named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, a highly regarded and long-standing honors program that has recognized outstanding campus leaders for their scholastic and community achievements for more than 60 years. After receiving a nomination by faculty or staff, students submit an application outlining their collegiate career, including membership in student organizations, campus and community involvement and grades. In order to be eligible, students must have completed at least 60 hours.

Cameron University Law Day 2016 observance to examine Miranda rights

In observance of Law Day 2016, the Cameron University Department of History and Government will host a roundtable focused on Miranda v. Arizona, the Supreme Court case that specified what’s commonly known as our Miranda rights. The roundtable will explore the procedural protections afforded to all U.S. citizens by the U.S. Constitution, how those rights are safeguarded by the court system, and why the preservation of these principles is essential to our liberty. The event is slated for Thursday, April 28 at 3:30 p.m. in the McCasland Ballroom. It is open to the public at no charge.

Cameron University faculty members honored

Cameron University faculty members Dr. Saeed Ahmad, Kathy Cloud, Dr. Mike Dunn, Dr. Holly Rice, and Dr. Jeffrey Seger were honored last week with awards recognizing their contributions to Cameron’s academic community. Ahmad received the Faculty Award for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching, Cloud received the Adjunct Faculty Award for Excellence and Innovation in Teaching, Dunn received the Faculty Award for Excellence in Mentoring Student Research, Rice was honored with the Faculty Award for Excellence in Service, and Seger was honored with the Bhattacharya Endowed Lectureship for Excellence in Research Award.

Cameron University Concert Band and 77th Army Band unite for free concert to feature renowned euphonium soloist Demondrae Thurman

The Cameron University Concert Band and Fort Sill's 77th Army Band will present a combined concert on Thursday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Cameron University Theatre. Special guest Demondrae Thurman, highly acclaimed euphonium soloist, will also be featured. The Cameron University Concert Band is conducted by Dr. Matthew Mireles, and the 77th Army Band is conducted by Warrant Officer 1st Class Jac’kel Smalls. Admission is free.

Cameron University Department of Music to present combined choral concert with guest ensemble Altus High School Varsity Chorale

The Cameron University Department of Music will present an Early Summer Choral Concert, a combined performance featuring the Cameron University Concert Choir, the Cameron University Women’s Ensemble and the Centennial Singers, on Tuesday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre. The concert will feature a special guest performance by the Altus High School Varsity Chorale, under the direction of Nick Young. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students/senior citizens. Cameron faculty, staff and students are admitted free with CU ID. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Cameron University accounting student selected for prestigious Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop

Cameron University student Summer Palmer, a junior accounting major from Mountain View, has been selected to attend the 22nd Annual American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Foundation Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop (ASLW) in Durham, N.C. from May 18-20. Palmer is one of approximately 100 college students selected to participate. ASLW is an annual invitation-only program for minority accounting students who plan to pursue the CPA designation. This event aims to strengthen students’ professional skills and understanding of the limitless possibilities and benefits of earning the CPA credential. As an invitee to the prestigious workshop, Palmer’s expenses will be provided by the AICPA Foundation.

Cameron University School of Business to host virtual information session about graduate programs

The ACBSP-accredited Cameron University School of Business will host a virtual information session for the school’s two graduate programs, Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Organizational Leadership, for community members who are looking for a graduate degree program with flexibility. The virtual session is set for Thursday, April 21, at 5:30 p.m. There is no charge for the session, although participants must register in advance at www.cameron.edu/business/graduate/moreinfo. Participants will receive login information after registering.

Cameron University ranks in top five for Best Value Colleges in Oklahoma

Cameron University is among the top five Best Value Colleges in Oklahoma, according to a study released by Smart Asset, a financial technology company that provides data-based information to help consumers with their financial decisions. Using data from three sources – 2014 National Center for Educational Statistics, 2016 Payscale and 2014 College InSight – the study indicates that, of the top five Oklahoma institutions in the survey, Cameron offered the lowest tuition for the 2013-14 academic year. At $5,055, it was well below the state average of $9,276. In addition, the average amount of scholarships and grants for Cameron students exceeded the state average, while student living costs were less than the state average.

Cameron University Multimedia Design Club offers free Photoshop workshop

Cameron University’s Multimedia Design Club will offer a free Photoshop workshop on Monday, April 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 110 of the Center for Emerging Technology and Entrepreneurial Studies. The workshop will teach participants how to make composite graphics for the purpose of cards, posters and other items. Pictures and graphics will be provided, although participants are encouraged to bring their own photographs, graphics or text. A scanner will be available for paper images. Cameron University Guitar Ensemble to present concert

The Cameron University Department of Music will present “Dances and Folksongs,” featuring the CU Guitar Ensemble in concert on Tuesday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the McCutcheon Recital Hall. Featured guitarists are Trevor Campbell, Hannah Esquer and William Herrara, Lawton; Tyler Farmer, Geronimo; Samuel Phillips, Sallisaw; and Wesley Stafford, Gulfport, Miss. The CU Guitar Ensemble is directed by Dr. Kirsten Underwood. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students, members of the military and senior citizens. Cameron University students, faculty and staff with CU I.D. are admitted at no charge. Seating is limited to 80 patrons.

Cameron University alumnus Gary Jones, Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspector, to address Cameron’s 2016 graduating class

Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspector Gary Jones, a Cameron University alumnus, will deliver the commencement address to Cameron’s Class of 2016. The annual graduation ceremony is slated for Friday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. at Cameron Stadium. Following his address, CU’s 2016 graduates will receive their diplomas. A fireworks display will cap off the occasion. The public is invited to attend free of charge. No tickets are required.

Cameron University, Fort Sill and Marie Detty/New Directions host events in observance of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month

Cameron University, Fort Sill and the Marie Detty Youth & Family Service Center, Inc./New Directions Women’s Shelter have slated a series of events in observance of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM). Throughout the month of April, each of the three organizations will be involved in numerous activities to provide information about sexual assault prevention, culminating with three dedication ceremonies on Friday, April 22.

“Eclectic,” Cameron University senior art show, to open April 9 at Leslie Powell Gallery

The Cameron University Department of Art will present “Eclectic,” an art exhibit featuring the works of Cameron’s senior art majors. The show takes place at the Leslie Powell Gallery, 620 S.W. Cameron University announces return of “CU Summer,” offering tuition waiver for Summer 2016 to concurrent seniors

Cameron University announces the return of “CU Summer,” an initiative that will provide financial support through a tuition waiver for the Summer 2016 semester to 2016 high school graduates who were concurrently enrolled during their senior year. Summer classes begin on Wednesday, June 1. Qualified students must enroll by Monday, May 2.

Cameron to host 500 high school students during annual Agriculture Interscholastic Meet

The Cameron University Department of Agriculture will play host to approximately 500 high school students representing high schools from throughout Oklahoma during its annual FFA Agriculture Interscholastic Meet on Wednesday, April 6, and the FFA Southwest District Public Speaking Contest on Tuesday, April 19. The event helps agriculture students hone their skills in areas ranging from practical animal science and agronomy to leadership and business while preparing for the state FFA competition. Cameron has hosted the Ag Interscholastic Meet for more than 50 years.
