Summer Camps

Art, science, piano and agriculture are just a few of the topics featured during Cameron University's annual summer camps, designed to appeal to children ages 6 – 18. The university offers a variety of programs of varying lengths and interests throughout the summer.

New camps this year include Cameron Connection, a college planning camp, as well as two livestock judging camps.

Camps are listed chronologically by date. Note that some camps have a registration deadline. 

Girls Basketball Offensive Skills Camp

  • May 13, 14 and 16
  • May 20, 21 and 23
  • May 28, 29 and 30

Six time slots available:  5-5:30 p.m., 5:30 - 6 p.m., 6-6:30 p.m.,6:30 - 7 p.m; 7 - 7;30 p.m. and 7;30 - 8 p.m.

Ages:  Players entering 7th through 12th grade.

Cost: $40 per week. First 12 players accepted per time slot. Four players for every coach. All individual skill work - no competition.

Players will work on shooting and dribbling and will learn Coach Tom Webb's method of become a better player. For more information, contact Coach Webb at 581-2529 or email twebb@cameron.edu.

Livestock Judging Camps

May 27-29 (Junior camp, ages 9-13)

May 29-31 (Senior camp, ages 14-19)

Fee:  $150 per student ($50 deposit due May 15)

The Junior Livestock Judging Camp is for younger and beginning judging participants and will focus on evaluation, note-taking and an introduction to oral reasons. The Senior Livestock Judging Camp is for older and more advanced judging participants. It will focus on evaluation with a primary emphasis on oral reasons.

These residential camps include room and meals. Participants will also receive a livestock judging manual and a camp t-shirt.

Students attending camp will have the unique opportunity for individual instruction from one of the nation’s most successful 4-H/FFA livestock judging coaches, Justin Rogers, Livestock Judging Coordinator/Coach at Cameron University.

Science Detectives Summer Academy

June 2-7

Deadline for application: April 16

Ages: Students entering the 8th, 9th or 10th grade in Fall 2013.

A FREE, residential camp on the Cameron University campus. Chaperones are on duty 24/7. Meals are included. Limited to 60 participants.

This academy asks, “Is bacterial resistance to antibiotics on the rise?” and bridges the gap of talking about science and doing science. Through the course of this academy, students will be introduced to methods of collecting field samples and isolating microorganisms, genetic and DNA analysis of bacteria, and scientific inquiry while living in the dorms on a college campus. Participants will also be provided opportunities to explore biomedical education through Oklahoma Technology Centers, as well as health care careers in a hospital setting.

During the day, participants will experience field and laboratory work in a state-of-the-art laboratory in the Sciences Complex, guided by public school science teachers and Cameron faculty. Evening activities include a swim party, Silly Olympics, a CSI mystery and more.

Sponsored by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, the Science Detectives Summer Academy is a collaborative effort by CU's Southwest Area Heath Education Center (SwAHEC), Department of Biological Sciences, and Education Department.

Creative Expressions Summer Art Camp 2013

Session I: June 3-6; June 10-13

Schedule: 8:30 a.m.-Noon

Age groups: 6, 7 & 8, 9 &10, 11 & 12

Fee: $125 per session (first child) *20% discount for each additional child

Location: Cameron University Art Department

Comprised of four two-week art workshops, Creative Expressions Summer Art Camp helps students explore their creative expression through visual art. Each session is unique, featuring a variety of creative opportunities.

Participants will attend four art classes daily, including traditional art media such as painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media, sculpture and paper and bookmaking as well as developing creative expression through the computer by learning how to translate an idea into digital art. The projects are designed to develop technical skill in the handling of art media and thinking skills in decision-making and composition. Refreshments and art supplies are provided. Each child will design an art portfolio to collect artworks from each class throughout the session and digital artwork will be printed and recorded on a CD for each participant.

Fine Arts Summer Art Institute 2013

Fridays, June 7, 14, 21, and 28 - Session I, Fundamentals of Drawing and Portfolio Development

Fee: $40 per Session (4 classes each)                      

Location: Cameron University Art Department

Session I: FUNDAMENTALS OF DRAWING AND PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT

Students will participate in a variety of drawing assignments under the direction of professional artists. These workshops are specifically designed to increase student's perceptual observation skills through various drawing techniques with traditional media including graphite, charcoal and conte’. Areas of artistic development will include drawing (the merits of a sketchbook), traditional subject matter (still life and figure) and abstraction and thematic variations. Drawing materials that will be provided include a spiral bound sketchbook; drawing paper; ebony, graphite, charcoal pencils and kneaded erasers.

Session II: DIGITAL ART PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT

Students will be introduced to several graphic software programs including Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. They will use the Wacom drawing tablets for production of computer-generated imagery. Computer graphics and image enhancement, aesthetics and technology will be emphasized.

Cameron Connection - College Planning Camp

June 9-13 

For high school freshmen and sophomores

No charge; limited to 60 participants  

Cameron Connection is an exciting, entertaining and enlightening experience for 60 rural high school students who want to know about college life. During this five-day, four-night camp, students will live on campus and participate in an informative and interactive program designed to help them begin making preparations to attend college. At the completion of the program, students will leave with a road map for completing the necessary steps to choose, be admitted, enroll and graduate from the university of their choice.

Students will learn virtually everything they need to know to be prepared for college, including the life-long benefits of a college education, the costs of a college education, how to financially plan for college, academic preparation, choosing a major, test preparation and more.

Cameron Connection is a two-year experience targeted at high school students in rural communities that may benefit from the program. A list of eligible high schools and complete application information can be found at www.cameron.edu/cameronconnection.

Once selected for the program, students will attend the camp prior to their freshman and sophomore years in high school. For Cameron Connection Summer 2013, upcoming sophomores will be eligible to apply but will only participate for one year.

NanoExplorers: A High School Summer Science Academy

June 9-14 and June 17-21

Application deadline: April 15

For students entering the 10th, 11th or 12th grade.

A 10-day residential academy where students will live at Cameron for the two-week period.

Free to Oklahoma residents. Registration is limited to 24 students.

NanoExplorers will introduce students to the concepts necessary to understand why very small systems exhibit unique behavior. Students will engage in hands-on activities designed to introduce the concepts of nanotechnology and related careers including applications in both chemistry and physics. Activities include the construction of a solar cell, construction of a super conductor train, determination of the crystal structure of a chemical compound, construction of a conductivity device, and an examination of amusement park physics that will include a trip to Frontier City in Oklahoma City. 

Hosted by the Cameron University Department of Physical Sciences, the academy is supported through a grant from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.

K.I.D.S. Camp 2013 (Kids Investigating the Discovery of Science)

June 17-20 

Application Deadline: June 13

8:30-11:30 a.m.

Ages: Kindergarten through 5th grade

Fee: $65 per child if registered by June 3; $75 if registered after June 3

Location: Sciences Complex (first floor, east entrance)

K.I.D.S. Camp is a four-day camp which builds on a child’s innate curiosity and intuitiveness. Students participant in hands-on, fun science and social studies activities using a substance that is very familiar and dear to most: FOOD! The camp is designed to promote creative learning by providing children with hands-on, interactive activities that encourage creative solutions and are aligned with national and state curriculum standards in science, math, social studies and technology. Hosted by the Cameron University Departments of Education.

Volleyball Camp

June 26-27

Grades 9-12, 9 a.m. - Noon, $60

Grades 6-8, 1:30 - 4 p.m., $50 

The camps will help participants learn volleyball fundamentals that will allow them to compete successfully in a team setting. On-court instruction will focus on the development of serving, attacking, passing, setting, digging and blocking skills. Limited to 30 participants per camp.

Campers will receive an official camp t-shirt. Court shoes must be worn for all activities occurring within the Aggie Re Center. Knee pads are recommended.

Boys Basketball Individual Camp

July 8 -11

Grades 2-6: 9 – 11:30 a.m.

Grades 7-12: 1 – 3:30 p.m.

$80 per camper, $65 for Cameron/military employees.  After June 25, registration is $100.

Location: Aggie Rec Center

Concentration will be on improving fundamentals, developing winning habits and emphasizing team play. Camp will also include individual contests, team competitions and games. Each camper will receive a camp basketball and FREE Gatorade for the week. Campers will be grouped by age or ability.

39th Annual Speech & Debate Camp

Session I: July 14-19

Session II: July 21-26

Fee/Discounted registration before June 1

The Speech and Debate Camp is hosted by the Department of Communication, 580-581-2359 or 2249. 

A residential camp (also day campers) for high school and junior high students in competitive speech and debate. Competitive individual events include acting, public speaking, poetry/prose interpretation, and duet acting. Types of debate events offered are cross-examination team debate (two person teams) and Lincoln-Douglas debate (one-on-one debate).

Last year, more than 400 students, teachers and staff members from six states participated in the two one-week camp sessions. Evening entertainment activities include student dances with Journey Productions, Improvisation Night, and Aggie Rec Center activities. 

Session I: Beginning Individual Events, Advanced Individual Events, Beginning Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Intermediate Lincoln-Douglas Debate, CX Debate.

Session II: Beginning Team CX Debate, Intermediate Team CX Debate, Advanced Team CX Debate, Beginning Lincoln-Douglas Debate, International Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Advanced Lincoln-Douglas Debate.
