CU fights back, splits with MSU
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (April 2) – Finally able to get back into Lone Star Conference North Division play, the Cameron Aggie softball team (26-22, 4-6 LSC North) today made the short drive down Interstate-44 to take on the Midwestern State Mustangs (28-16, 9-5 LSC North). The two teams split the afternoon double-header at MSU’s Mustang Park, and will meet up for the second half of their series this weekend in Lawton. Today the Mustangs won game one 7-0, while the Aggies rebounded to win game two 12-4.
“Midwestern has a good team, so it was good to come down and take one from them at their place,” Head Coach Richie Nye said. “Hopefully we can take two from them this weekend. It’s tough to win on the road in conference play, especially if you get down after your first loss. Our girls responded well and came out and swung the bats better.”
The Aggies were nearly no-hit in the first game, after recording no runs on a mere 1 hit. They also committed 1 error. The game was held scoreless through the first three innings, but the Mustangs broke it wide open with a seven-run fourth inning. MSU scored 7 runs on 6 hits, and had some incredible pitching.
“In game one we didn’t hit very well,” Coach Nye said. “One really bad inning cost us the game. We didn’t hit the ball and didn’t adjust at all. We hope to do better on Saturday when MSU comes to our field.”
Midwestern State touts one of the best pitchers in the entire conference in sophomore Katie Petersen. After today’s action Peterson has a season ERA of 0.90 and a record of 19-4. The Mustangs have also won the last two Lone Star Conference Championships.
“Petersen is not letting many people score runs on her,” Coach Nye said. “She didn’t strikeout a whole lot, but didn’t give us anything to hit. She spins the ball really well.”
Junior RF Shareena Pulse recorded Cameron’s only hit with a bunt single in the top of the second inning. She went 1-3 at the plate with a strikeout. Four Aggies struck out in the game.
Sophomore pitcher Ashton McBride was saddled with the loss after going the first 4.0 innings of the game. She allowed 7 runs, only 2 earned, on 5 hits. McBride faced 21 batters and recorded 4 walks and 1 strikeout.
After being shutout in the first game, the Aggies came out seeking revenge in today’s nightcap. Cameron put up 1 run almost immediately in the top of the first inning, and added 3 more in their at-bats in the second. The Mustangs tied it up with a big, four-run third inning. The score stood at 4-4 after the first four innings.
The Aggies then put up 8 runs over the final 3 innings to win the game. They scored 12 runs on 16 hits, while the Mustangs scored only 4 runs on 9 hits. In the field, the Aggies committed 3 errors.
“In the second game we came out hitting the ball well,” Coach Nye said. “They tied it up, but we came back and scored a bunch of runs. It was a good outing. We hit the ball well.”
Freshman pitcher Morgan Glawe got the start for CU, and went 2.0 innings allowing 3 runs, all earned, on 3 hits. She faced 12 batters and threw 3 walks.
McBride entered the game in the third inning in relief and went the final 5.0 innings. She only gave up 1 run on 6 hits after facing 22 batters. McBride also finished with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts. After recording both a win and a loss today McBride moves her season record to 18-13 with an ERA of 4.20.
“Ashton pitched well,” Coach Nye said. “She shut them down the rest of the way after coming in during the second game.”
Senior CF Sammi Adams had a very impressive game at the plate after going a perfect 4-4. She scored a game-high 4 runs and knocked in 1 RBI. She also recorded a stolen base, hit a double, and recorded a sacrifice hit.
Juniors Megan Young (SS) and Chelsey Jordan (DH) both recorded a game-high 3 RBI on the afternoon. Young went 2-4 with a pair of runs while Jordan went 2-5. Young also hit 2 doubles, while Jordan hit 1 double.
As mentioned previously, the Aggies and Mustangs match up this weekend for the second half of their home-and-home series. A double-header between the teams begins at 1:00pm this Saturday (April 5), at Cameron Field.
“I look for another tough conference double-header this weekend,” Coach Nye said. “It will be nice to be at home finally, and I expect us to hit better. We will make better adjustments, especially now that we have seen their pitching. We have seen what we need to do to hit better against their good pitching.”
Those unable to attend the game can visit the Cameron Athletics website (goaggies.cameron.edu) to follow the action. Fans can tune into the new softball broadcasts via the Aggie Video Network as well as follow along with live updating statistics.
Cameron’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be selling snow-cones throughout the afternoon, with all proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish foundation.
