Lone Star Conference

CU splits with ECU, heads to playoffs

LAWTON, Oklahoma (April 26) – On Senior Day at Cameron Field, Aggie fans witnessed everything from a three-homerun day, to a grand-slam, to even a marriage proposal. This afternoon the Aggie softball team (34-28, 12-12 LSC North) split their double-header with the East Central Tigers (21-34-1, 9-15 LSC North) in front of the largest crowd of the season. ECU won the first game 6-3, but CU bounced back to win game two 12-4 in a fifth-inning run rule.

“It’s nice to split, but we really wanted to get the sweep on senior day,” Head Coach Richie Nye said. “Our girls played well this week and now all of our focus is on the postseason tournament.”

On Tuesday of this week the teams split their double-header with CU winning game one 12-3, and ECU winning game two 5-2. Tuesday’s double-header split clinched a spot in the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament for the Aggies.

Before today’s first game, a brief ceremony took place at home plate honoring Cameron’s three softball seniors (Whitney Richardson, Sammi Adams, Melissa Bour) and graduate-assistant Garrett Pace, who graduates from Cameron this May with a graduate degree in Psychology. Pace has been with CU for the last seven years. Following the scheduled senior day ceremony, third-baseman Melissa Bour was proposed to by her boyfriend at home plate.

After the game got started it took a while for either team to record a run or a hit. Cameron finally broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning and held a 1-0 lead through the first four innings. A costly error in the top of the fifth inning led to five unearned runs and a 5-1 Tiger lead. The Aggies fought back but did not have enough to win it.

Cameron lost the game 6-3. The Aggies scored 3 runs on 4 hits and committed 3 very pricey errors, while the Tigers scored 6 runs on 8 hits and only committed 1 error. Sophomore pitcher Ashton McBride was saddled with the loss after going all 7.0 innings. She allowed 6 runs, only 1 earned, on 8 hits after facing 34 batters. She also threw 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.

In today’s second game the Aggies came out with a vengeance and put up 6 quick runs in the first two innings. Cameron was up 8-4 after the first 3 innings, and only need a few more runs to force a run-rule and an early ending to the game. CU got the 4 runs they needed in the bottom of the fifth inning to win the game 12-4 in only five innings.

Cameron scored 12 runs on an impressive 13 hits while only committing 1 error. East Central on the other hand was limited to 4 runs on 5 hits with 2 errors. Junior pitcher Giselle Guzman recorded the win after going the final 2.1 innings. She did not allow a run or a hit and faced just 8 batters.

Senior centerfielder Sammi Adams had a huge day at the plate with a monstrous 3 homeruns. She went 5-6 with 4 RBI, a walk, and a strikeout. Adams also recorded 3 stolen bases today.

“Sammi had an outstanding day today,” Coach Nye said. “It was great to see her have a great pair of games on Senior Day, but she has been playing this well all season. She is a great player and will be a big factor for us in the playoffs.”

As mentioned previously, the next action for the Cameron Aggie softball team comes later this week in the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament. The postseason event will be played in Durant, Oklahoma, from May 1-3.

“We are so excited to be going to the playoffs for the second straight year, and only the third time in school history,” Coach Nye said. “It’s going to be like a whole new season so we will have to stay focused. We will play some very tough teams but I like our chances.”
