Aggies spilt with 'Stangs again
LAWTON, Oklahoma (April 5) – In front of the largest crowd of the season, the Cameron Aggie softball team (27-23, 5-7 LSC North) today hosted the Midwestern State Mustangs (29-17, 10-6 LSC North) in the second half of the home-and-home Red River Rumble series. Today’s action resembled last Wednesday’s as the teams once again split the double-header. MSU again won the opening game, with CU bouncing back to take the nightcap. Today the Mustangs won game one 4-1, with the Aggies taking game two 7-2.
“I’m pleased with how we played. Getting the win today will keep us in the hunt,” Head Coach Richie Nye said. “Overall it was a good afternoon. I’m very pleased with how we were able to come back and split after being down.”
In the first game the Mustangs opened up with a 1-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back. MSU led for the entire game although Cameron was able to get on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Once again Midwestern was led to victory by sophomore Katie Petersen who in 9.2 innings vs. CU has allowed only 1 run on 4 hits.
“We couldn’t score off of their ace pitcher,” Coach Nye said. “She was tough. She has been shutting most teams down. We had to find a way to win that game and we couldn’t do it.”
Cameron scored only 1 run on 3 hits in the opener, and did not commit an error. Midwestern scored 4 runs on 9 hits and committed 1 error. Sophomore pitcher Ashton McBride (18-14) recorded the loss for CU.
The Aggies rebounded to win the second game of today’s double-header with Cameron leading for nearly the entire game. For the second straight contest MSU opened up with a run in the very first inning, but CU went up 2-1 after their at-bats in the same inning. The contest was tied at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the third, and the Aggies led for the remainder after the inning concluded.
“Thank goodness we stepped up in the second game and scored some runs,” Coach Nye said. “MSU is a good team so splitting with them is not a bad thing. We still should be sitting pretty good.”
The Mustangs recorded 4 errors in the game, and scored 2 runs on 5 hits. The Aggies meanwhile scored 7 runs on 6 hits and committed 1 error. Sophomore pitcher Sherry Tetreault (3-3) recorded the victory for Cameron.
Cameron travels to Weatherford, Oklahoma, this Tuesday (April 8) to take on the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State. CU and SWOSU conclude their season series next weekend in Lawton at Cameron Field. Tuesday’s games begin at 2:00pm, while next Saturday’s start at 1:00pm.
