CU tennis drops MSU, 8-1

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (March 31) – After driving the short distance down to Wichita Falls, Texas, the Cameron Aggie men’s tennis team (13-4) can add yet another win to their impressive early season total. The nationally ranked #11 Aggies are having an incredible season and today beat the Midwestern State Mustangs (11-5) by the score 8-1. MSU is also nationally ranked, and currently sits at #35 overall.

“I’m definitely pleased with the how the team played today,” Head Coach James Helvey said. “We got the victory and that’s what I wanted.”

The Aggies took care of business today and swept all six of their singles matches against the Mustangs, and only dropped one of the three doubles matches.

“We are just trying to stay healthy and keep playing good tennis,” Coach Helvey said. “We take it one match at a time. It’s easy to look ahead, but we try and just focus on one match and that’s where we were looking today.”

Senior Jordi Mullor had a very big victory in the No. 1 singles match, defeating MSU’s Karim Belhadj in impressive fashion. The match was scored 6-1, 6-0, with Mullor in control throughout.

Mullor also won the No. 1 doubles match with partner Daniel Pazos, a junior, by the score 8-3. Pazos won the No. 2 singles match on the day, defeating MSU’s Zac Dillard 6-0, 6-2.

Cameron’s only loss on the afternoon came in the No. 3 doubles match, where the Mustang duo of Chad Meeks and Brian Humpert inched out an 8-3 win against CU’s Saman Samii and Ignacio Murgier. Samii, a junior, won his singles match in the No. 4 spot as he defeated Travis Stegner 6-4, 6-3. Murgier, a senior, did not play singles today.

“We got off to a slow start today since we hadn’t played since last Wednesday,” Coach Helvey said. “Once we got into a rhythm and got our timing down we played well and it showed.”

One of the closest contests of the afternoon came in the No. 6 singles match. Senior Agustin Criado needed a third set to knock off MSU’s John Svard 6-2, 5-7, 10-7. Criado did not play doubles.

Senior Nicolas Mascheroni also had a close match, but did not require a third and final set. He disposed of the Mustangs’ Vjekoslav Stipanic 6-4, 7-6, in the No. 3 singles match.

In doubles, Mascheroni paired with junior Cristian Easton to win the No. 2 doubles match, 9-7. Their opponents in the match were Zac Dillard and Daniel McMullan. Easton also won his singles match in the No. 5 slot. He defeated McMullan 6-4, 6-3.

The Aggies hit the road again tomorrow afternoon to battle the East Central University Tigers. The match begins at 1:00pm in Ada, Oklahoma, and will feature both the Cameron men’s and women’s tennis teams. The women are currently ranked #30 in the nation.

“We hope to play well tomorrow,” Coach Helvey said. “If we play well we will be alright.”

The next home action for the CU tennis squads comes this weekend when the Cameron women’s team hosts St. Mary’s University, Armstrong Atlantic University, and Northeastern State University in a four-team quad match. Parking and Admission to the CU Tennis Center is always free.
