Aggies dispose of Eagles, record sweep

LAWTON, Oklahoma (April 15) – Cameron’s nationally ranked tennis teams hosted Oklahoma Christian University this afternoon at the CU Tennis Center for a late-season non-conference match. The Aggies swept their match against the Eagles, with the men’s team (18-3) winning 7-2 and the women’s team (12-9) winning 6-2. After today CU has just a pair of matches left on their 2007-2008 schedule, one at home and one on the road.

The men’s and women’s teams for both CU and OCU are nationally ranked. In the NCAA Division II national rankings the Aggie men are ranked #7 and the Aggie women are ranked #25. In the NAIA national rankings the Eagle men are ranked #20 and the Eagle women are ranked #25.

“Overall it was a good day,” Head Coach James Helvey said. “OCU has a good team as both their men and women are ranked. We just went out, played well, and took care of business.”

In this afternoon’s doubles matches, both the Cameron men and women went 2-1. The women won the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches, while the men won the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches.

Junior Sophia Rich and sophomore Carolina Mullor recorded the lone shutout in the doubles round, as they won the No. 3 women’s doubles match, 8-0. Mullor continued her sweep this afternoon with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 5 singles match.

Freshman Whitney Renfurm was the only other Aggie to record a shutout today. She won the No. 6 singles match in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep.

Senior Nicholas Mascheroni also recorded a big victory for Cameron this afternoon. In the No. 4 singles match, he was forced to a decisive third set. Mascheroni played very well and ended up winning the match 6-2, 4-6, 10-3.

Four of Cameron’s six men’s singles matches today were forced to a third and final set. Senior Jordi Mullor, one of Cameron’s reigning LSC Tennis Players of the Week, had one of the closer victories after winning the No. 1 singles match 6-7 (8-6), 6-4, 6-3.

Also being forced to a third set was senior Megan deBlonk who won the No. 3 singles match. She won 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 in an obviously very tight match.

“We did a good job of battling today,” Coach Helvey said. “Both of our teams played well. Now we need to keep this going to wrap up the week and head into the postseason.”

After singles concluded the Aggies had only lost one match on either side. Cameron dropped the No. 3 men’s singles match in three sets, as well as the No. 1 women’s singles match.

Junior Viviana Seca, Cameron’s other reigning LSC Tennis Player of the Week, had her No. 2 singles match suspended due to light.

The Aggies host Collin County College tomorrow at 1:00pm at the CU Tennis Center. The match is Cameron’s final home match of the season. CU then travels to Edmond, Oklahoma, on Thursday (April 17) to take on the Central Oklahoma Bronchos in their final regular season match of 2007-2008.

Next week CU will take part in the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament in Abilene, Texas. The event will be from April 24-26. From there the Aggies will move on to the national tournament.
