Aggies take down Patriots with ease
LAWTON, Oklahoma (April 20) – The nationally-ranked Cameron Aggie tennis teams conquered the Patriots of Dallas Baptist University in dominating fashion today at the CU Tennis Complex. The #11 CU men swept every match and won convincingly 9-0 while the #45 CU women dropped only three matches and won 6-3.
Current Lone Star Conference men’s tennis Player of the Week, Daniel Pazos, was again perfect winning his #1 doubles match with Diego Trojano 8-6 and his #1 singles match 6-2, 6-2. Pazos has won the LSC men’s tennis Player of the Week award three times this season and was also last week’s Aggie of the Week.
The rest of the Aggie men easily controlled the match with the closest singles match coming from Cameron’s #5 Carlos Viscarra and DBU’s Bronson Vaughn. Viscarra came out on top 6-3, 6-2.
On the women’s side of the match, the Black and Gold jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play. #1 Irene George and Sophia Rich outscored their opponents 8-3 while both the #2 and #3 matches went to Cameron by the score of 8-6.
In singles play, #1 George, #2 Rich, and #5 Shaneka Knights all tallied points for Cameron and the Aggies were able to seal the 6-3 victory.
In the #6 match, Heather Doslich battled hard for two sets and the tie breaker before losing. Doslich dropped the first set 6-1, fought back to win the second set 4-6, and went on to take a 9-3 lead in the tie-breaker. Unfortunately, Doslich could not hold on to the early lead and fell 11-9 in the deciding tie-breaker set.
“Today was wonderful. Our guys played great. They really played strong today. The girls, they stepped up today and got a big win against a team that is ranked ahead of us in the region. We got to 8-8 in the region and that’s where we need to be. We played good tennis and I’m very happy with today’s results,” Coach James Helvey said after the match.
With the wins, CU’s men’s tennis team improves to 18-8 and the women move to 12-11. Both teams return to action tomorrow (April 21) against Collin County College. The match is
set to begin at 2:00pm at the CU Tennis Complex.
