CU ends season with 3-1 win over ASU
SAN
ANGELO, Texas (November 3) – In the final regular season match of the season,
the Cameron Aggie volleyball team (13-15, 6-6 LSC) defeated Angelo State
University (6-21, 4-8 LSC) on the road in Texas. Cameron narrowly missed out on
the sweep, defeating the Rambelles 3-1 (31-29, 30-24, 25-30, 30-28). The match
was preceded by Angelo
State’s Senior Night
ceremonies.
“In the
fourth game we did a great job of taking back the momentum,” Head Coach John
Haroun said. “Overall I’m pleased but I thought we could have done a better job
with our hitting. Our outside and right-side hitters are capable of playing a
little stronger.”
Cameron was in control throughout most of the match, but actually fell behind
by nine points in the third game. Angelo
State looked as if they
were going to force a fifth game late in the match, leading 23-20 in the fourth
game. The Aggies responded and shut the door on any chance of an ASU comeback.
The match lasted just over two hours and was ASU’s eleventh straight defeat.
Junior
middle blocker Whitney Long had a huge match for Cameron, leading the team
offensively with 16 kills. She also recorded an impressive .371 attack
percentage after attacking the net 35 times with just 3 errors. Long’s 2
block-assists also contributed to the victory.
“I
thought Whitney played an outstanding match,” Coach Haroun said. “She was
unstoppable and we tried to get her the ball every opportunity. To record 16
kills and only 3 errors is pretty outstanding.”
Leading
the team defensively today was sophomore outside hitter Lindsay Paziuk who
recorded a team-high 20 defensive digs. She also recorded 3 kills on 20 attacks
and a single service ace.
Sophomore
setter Laura Ellerbrock finished with a team-high 34 assists. She also totaled
7 kills on 10 attacks, with no errors, for a team-best .700 attack percentage.
Additionally, Ellerbrock recorded 13 defensive digs and 3 block-assists.
Reigning
Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week Ruth Johnson, a freshman
middle blocker, finished the match with 12 kills on 42 attacks with 7 errors
for a .119 attack percentage. She also recorded an assist and a block-assist.
Senior
outside hitter Fernanda Queiroz recorded 11 kills on 50 attacks playing in her
final regular season match as an Aggie. She also contributed 9 defensive digs,
2 assists, 2 block-assists, and a service ace.
The Aggie
volleyball team will now focus their attention on the Lone Star Conference
Championship tournament which runs from November 8-10. The tournament takes
place in Canyon, Texas, on the campus of West Texas
A&M University.
Stay tuned to the Cameron Athletics website at goaggies.cameron.edu for the
latest postseason information on your Cameron Aggie volleyball team. Seeding
for the tournament will be available via the Lone Star Conference website
(lonestarconference.org) after the conclusion of all of today’s volleyball
matches. As of this release Cameron is slated to take on Midwestern State
in the first round of the tournament.
“Now we
are just going to keep doing what we are doing and hope to be able to compete,”
Coach Haroun said. “I think we just want to go in there and battle. Our
struggle has been that we start out slow but if we can start strong and
maintain momentum throughout the entire match then we can compete. I think MSU
is a tough match for anybody, but if our defense can keep playing well and we
get momentum it will be an interesting match.”
