CU ends year with 3-0 sweep, 17 wins
WEATHERFORD, Oklahoma (November 7) – The Cameron Aggie volleyball team traveled to Weatherford, Oklahoma today to take on the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU). The Aggies were in total control throughout the match and closed out in three straight sets to finish their winning season on a good note.
“We played very well today and were pretty much in control throughout the match,” Head Coach Brianne Smedley said. “The girls played on a high level throughout the entire match.”
Tonight’s match was revenge for the Aggies. Looking to close out their season in a winning fashion, the Aggies were on fire and captured the first set by the score of 25-9 after finishing on a solid .481 attacking percentage.
In the second set, the Bulldogs picked up their game and gave Cameron a run for its money. After long rallies, the Aggies battled through and won the set by the score of 29-27.
Keeping momentum at high from being up by two sets, the Black and Gold did not hold back and won the third set in decisive fashion by the score of 25-15 to finish the 2009 Aggie volleyball season.
“We let up a little bit in the second set and just had too many errors, but the girls did a good job of winning that set anyway,” Coach Smedley said. “Other than that, it was a great performance by all of our players.”
Sophomores Adrienne Lawson and Nikita Abbott both had a great match tonight. They contributed with 14 and 11 kills, respectively. In addition Lawson added two service aces and 7 defensive digs while Abbott recorded two defensive digs as well.
Unfortunately, the Aggies will not be making the trip to the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament this year. With a 3-0 loss to the Bronchos of Central Oklahoma on November 7, the dream of making it to the playoffs was gone. Coach Smedley said the girls should keep their heads high after a great season.
“Even though we did not make it to the conference tournament, I want the girls to feel that we had a great season anyway,” Coach Smedley said. “We did finish with 17 wins for the season which is higher than last year.”
Cameron needed to win both of their last matches and hope for East Central to lose at least one of their matches in order to clinch a postseason berth. After losing of November 7, mathematically the Aggies were eliminated from playoff contention.
“We had suffered many five set losses this season which have all been crucial to the outcome of our still great year,” Smedley said. “One win here or there could have placed us in the conference tournament. The margins have been extremely small for us this season.”
Tonight’s match wrapped up the 2009 Aggie volleyball season in the best way possible. Coach Smedley said she is proud of her team and will remember many great things from this year.
“When I look back, we have tons of great wins and many memorable moments,” Coach Smedley said. “We have battled hard in all of our matches but like I said earlier, the margins have been small but that is the way sports go sometimes. I am proud of all the efforts we have made.”
