Talented duo added to CU volleyball

LAWTON, Oklahoma (June 11) – The first and second signees of the 2009 offseason were added to the Cameron Aggie volleyball team today by head coach Brianne Smedley. Incoming freshmen Joanie Dubberly of Lee’s Summit Community Christian High School (Lee’s Summit, MO) and Kellie Dickerson of Bishop Machebeuf High School (Denver, CO) were officially signed today and will join the CU squad for the 2009 season next fall.

Joanie Dubberly is a 5’6” libero and defensive specialist who was a four-year letter winner in volleyball under Coach Mikki Shearer at LSCCHS. She also played one year of varsity soccer for the Eagles.

“I’m very excited to sign Joanie; we needed to add someone with strong defensive skills because we lost a lot of defense from last year,” Coach Smedley said. “After watching Joanie play I could easily see she is a really tough kid and a tough competitor.”

Following both her junior and senior campaigns at Lee’s Summit, Dubberly was named to the All-Conference First Team. Her impressive play was a primary reason the squad won the District Championship last season.

Additionally, Coach Smedley’s newest signee was named to the All-District First Team following her senior year, and the Tri-State All-Tournament Team during her sophomore season. She was also a standout club volleyball player, competing on the talented Team KC last year.

“Joanie is the type of player that I want coming in and contributing on the defensive end for us,” Coach Smedley said. “When she is on the court she is a very focused player. She’s focused not only on what the opposing team is doing but on her own technical skills as well.”

Dubberly, who was named to her school’s honor roll all four years of high school, will be a freshman sports and fitness management major beginning next fall.

The Cameron volleyball program’s other new addition is 5’11” middle blocker Kellie Dickerson. Dickerson played two years of varsity volleyball at Bishop Machebeuf under coaches John Contreras and Trey Salinas.

“Kellie will add a lot of offensive options for us, and will help us defensively with her strong blocking,” Coach Smedley said. “At her height she will be one of our shorter middle blockers, but she more than makes up for her size with her jumping ability.”

Dickerson had a phenomenal senior season for the Buffalos and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. She was also named to both the All-League First Team and All-State Academic team last season. Additionally, her efforts in the classroom last year earned her 2nd Honor Roll honors and the English 4 Academic Award.

Following her junior year Dickerson was named to the All-State Academic Team and the All-Conference Honorable Mention Team.

Like Dubberly, Dickerson was an impressive club volleyball player as well. For the last three years Dickerson was a star on the competitive Juggernaut Volleyball Club in Colorado.

“Kellie is a very athletic individual who plays for an intense club program in Colorado,” Coach Smedley said. “I know she knows how to work hard.”

Dickerson will be a freshman psychology major next fall.

“So far I am really happy with the way recruiting has gone this year,” Coach Smedley said. “We have already signed solid players who will come in and battle for starting positions. I believe this team is well on its way to having a very successful fall season.”

The 2009 Cameron Aggie volleyball schedule is nearing finalization. Aggie fans are encouraged to stay tuned to the official athletics website (goaggies.cameron.edu) as next year’s schedule will be posted in the coming days.
