Lone Star Conference

CU bags 9th place finish as OIW hosts

DUNCAN, Oklahoma (October 13) – Cameron’s women’s golf team wrapped up their annual hosting duties at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate for Women tournament today with a 9th place finish. A total of 13 teams participated in this week’s event, which was played at The Territory Golf and Country Club in Duncan. CU’s two-round score in the event was a 642 (318-324).

“We didn’t play great but we didn’t play terrible,” Head Coach Rick Goodwin said. “Obviously we wish we would have placed better, but we played well enough to take away a few positives.”

St. Edward’s University led throughout the tournament and finished in 1st place with a two-round score of 615 (304-310). SEU was forced to count only one score above 79, less than any other team in the event. Leading the way for the Hilltoppers was Kirby Baker who won the individual title with a 144 (73-71).

“We were able to beat a few Lone Star Conference teams in this event and really got to see who would be the elite teams when we start back up in the spring,” Coach Goodwin said. “It was a nice way to end the fall season.”

For the third straight event, senior Kass McGrath led the way for the Aggie women. Despite starting the tournament with a first round 82, McGrath fought back on day two with four birdies and a 76. Her total score of 158 was CU’s best and good enough for a tie at 15th place. McGrath also finished with the tournament’s second-most birdies (6).

Senior Marrik Wooten turned in CU’s other top 25 finish with a 160 (79-81) which put her in a tie at 23rd place overall. Wooten also finished the event with the tournament’s best par three scoring average (2.88, -1) and the fourth-most birdies (4).

Not far behind Wooten was newcomer and freshman Kylee Johnson who turned in a 161 (79-82). Johnson’s score put her in a tie for 26th place overall.

Cameron’s day one leader, junior Megan Whan, took home 31st place honors with a two-day score of 163 (78-85). Whan also finished the OIW with the field’s sixth-best par four scoring average (4.35, +7).

“I thought Megan played very well this tournament,” Coach Goodwin said. “Kass had some good shots, and Marrik played well at her home course. No one played poorly this week, but we have some things to work on heading into the spring.”

Rounding out CU’s five scores was another freshman newcomer, Johnna Holden. Holden finished this week’s event in 66th place overall with a score of 179 (90-89).

Playing as individual medalists for the Aggies were juniors Blaze Petty and Tori McCollom. Petty finished in a tie for 64th place overall with a score of 175 (86-89), while McCollom finished in a tie at 68th place with a score of 181 (93-88).

“We didn’t have very good weather this fall but we were still able to get in a few solid rounds,” Coach Goodwin said. “I thought our tournament was a great success and once again everyone at The Territory put on a great show. We can’t thank them enough for their work.”

This week’s OIW concludes the fall season for the Cameron women’s golf team. The Aggie women will head back out to the course next spring for the championship portion of their 2009-2010 season.
