Aggie women finish 6th in host tourney

DUNCAN, Oklahoma (October 16) – The annual Oklahoma Intercollegiate for Women invitational golf tournament, hosted by Cameron University, wrapped up this afternoon at The Territory Golf Club in Duncan, Oklahoma. The Aggie women’s golf team finished the event in 6th place with a team score of 626 (310-316). Cameron improved their team score for the fifth consecutive tournament, a very impressive feat.

“I was really pleased with what we put in,” Head Coach Rick Goodwin said. “I’m really pleased we shot a 310-316 tournament, which is much better than what we expected to do for the entire fall season. We played really well.”

Oklahoma City University won the event with an overall team score of 563 (285-278). They finished 38 strokes ahead of second-place Drury University (601, 297-304). OCU’s Laura Jones won the individual title with a 136 (70-66). The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers all came from Oklahoma City University.

A total of 13 schools and 70 players competed at this year’s tournament.

“This was an excellent tournament,” Coach Goodwin said. “The girls don’t hit it in trouble as bad as the guys do, and good shots are rewarded at this course. This is a professionally groomed golf course and when you play good you are rewarded. When you make putts you shoot low numbers.”

Cameron sophomore Marrik Wooten was the top finisher for the Aggies, ending the tournament with a two-round score of 145 (68-77). Wooten finished in 5th place overall, a day after leading the entire field. She also recorded one of the tournament’s two eagles, the second most birdies (6), the second best par-three scoring average (3.00, E), and the third best par-four scoring average (4.15, +3).

“The golf course played harder today; they played the ball down and the wind was up so it probably added five shots on everyone’s score,” Coach Goodwin said. “We played well against some good competition. We were able to build off of the scores that we shot and got better all fall. Now it’s time to look at how we stand in the conference and in the region and find more things that we can build on.”

CU’s other top ten finish came courtesy of junior Renee Breeze who finished in a tie for 7th place overall. She shot a 149 (71-78) for the tournament. She recorded the sixth most pars (22) and the third best par-five scoring average (4.83, -1).

Sophomore Anna Hataway and freshman Tori McCollom were the only other Aggies to finish in the top fifty. Hataway finished in a tie for 39th place with a two-round score of 164 (83-81) while McCollom ended in a tie at 44th place after shooting a 168 (88-80).

“You are always unhappy with the big numbers. It’s what we preach and work on: course management and the mental part of the game. It’s really just throwing away shots,” Coach Goodwin said. “What really pleased me was that Anna shot her best round of the season, as did Tori.”

Playing as an individual medalist, freshman Blaze Petty finished the event in a tie for 64th place. She shot a two-round score of 183 (94-89).

“The young ones are still learning,” Coach Goodwin said. “Certainly experience wise we got better and just had a great fall season.”

This week’s tournament was originally scheduled to be played at the Lawton Country Club but was moved to The Territory Golf Club at the last minute due to some course construction at the LCC.

“We really want to thank The Territory for this week,” Coach Goodwin said. “This tournament was scheduled to go at the Lawton Country Club but The Territory stepped up and took over the tournament on short notice. We had great treatment and the people at The Territory have done more than we could ever have asked. Donovan Grahn, Brian King, Brad Babek, and their respective staffs have truly given us the royal treatment.”

The Oklahoma Intercollegiate for Women golf tournament officially ended the fall season for the Cameron Aggie women’s golf team. The spring season picks back up next February.
