CU Women take 5th at Lion Invite

WOLFE CITY, Texas  (October 2) – The Aggie women’s golf team stayed consistent to finish in 5th place after the final round of the Lion Fall Invitational, an event hosted by Texas A&M- Commerce. The Aggies finished up the two-day event this afternoon with a total of 676 strokes (343-333) with nearly every player improving on their score from day one.

Tarleton State University continues their well-played season, winning the tournament with a team score of 608 (302-306). Carla Cooper of Tarleton State placed first with 147 strokes (74-73). A total of 9 teams and 48 players participated in the event.

“We played a lot better today,” Head Coach Rick Goodwin said. “We’re still not where we want to be, but I’m happy with our production. I’m looking for improvement every time we go out and we keep showing improvement, which is good.”

Sophomore Anna Hataway finished at the top of the Aggie squad with a total score of 165 (80-85), good enough for 14th place overall. Hataway finished with the 3rd most birdies (3) in the tournament along with the 3rd lowest par-three scoring (3.38, +3).

Hataway also set her new collegiate personal best after the first round, turning in a score of 80.

Tough-playing junior Renee Breeze followed close behind finishing in a tie at 15th place with a total score of 166 (85-81). She finished the tournament with the second-best par-three scoring (3.25, +2) and the seventh-most pars (17).

Like Hataway, sophomore Marrik Wooten also finished with the third-most birdies (3) in the tournament. She ended the event tied for 22nd place with a two-day score of 171 (88-83).

Freshman Blaze Petty finished the tournament in a tie for 29th place overall. Her two-round score totaled 176 strokes (90-86).

“Megan Whan got 39th (place) today which is much better for her,” Coach Goodwin said. “That was her best so far this year, but she was sick yesterday and didn’t play as well.”

Whan finished the event with a total score of 179 (95-84).

Freshman Tori McCollum, who played as an individual medalist, totaled 191 strokes (95-96) which was good enough for 45th place.

“Overall we played better,” Coach Goodwin said. “It was a little windy but still good. We will go right back to practicing tomorrow because we’ll be heading out in another three days to Edmond.”

The Cameron Aggie women’s golf team does indeed travel north to Edmond this weekend to take part in the Central Oklahoma Classic hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma. The tournament will be played at the Kickingbird Golf Club with round one taking place on Monday (October 8) and round two taking place on Tuesday (October 9).
