CU breaks records on way to 5th
OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (October 6) – Cameron's Aggie women's golf team finished off a spectacular two-day performance today by breaking two school records at the Lady Broncho Masters Classic tournament hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma at the Lincoln Park Golf Course in Oklahoma City. Cameron placed 5th overall out of 18 teams with a team score of 610 (306, 304).
Tarleton State placed first in the tournament just 14 strokes ahead of CU, shooting 596 (302, 294). Raelyn Smith from Angelo State University placed first individually with a score of 136 (71, 65).
All four of Cameron’s scores were under 83 for today and 85 for yesterday. The Aggie golfers broke the school women’s golf record of lowest team round with today’s 304 (beating 305), and they also broke the record of lowest two-round tournament score (beating 616).
“We are definitely tickled pink,” Head Coach Rick Goodwin said. “This morning it was raining, cold, and windy, but the golf course was receptive to good play and our kids just grinded it out. We had two girls tie for third and the team finished fifth which means we lost a place, but we played better today.”
Newcomer Kylee Johnson led the way for CU yesterday with a 73 and finished with a total of 147 (73, 74). She tied for 3rd overall with senior Kass McGrath who had a spectacular performance today and shot a two-round score of 147 (75, 72).
“Kass made an eagle on a par 4 for a great finish,” Goodwin said. “Everything went well today. This tournament gives us momentum going into our home event next week; we have more confidence. We are really excited with how we played this week.”
Juniors Megan Whan and Blaze Petty and senior Marrik Wooten finished with scores of 163 (80, 83), 173 (84, 89), and 153 (78, 75), respectively.
Playing as individual medalists for CU were freshman Johnna Holden, who shot a 165 (81, 84), and junior Tori McCollum, who shot a 165 (81, 84). Holden finished 68th and McCollum finished 95th.
“This top five finish puts us in a much, much better frame of mind going into next week,” Coach Goodwin said. “We are competing at a high level, and that’s what we’ve been trying to get to: a place where we can compete with some of the best teams in our region.”
The Aggie women’s golf team will host the Oklahoma Intercollegiate for Women next Monday and Tuesday (October 12-13) in their final tournament of the season. The annual CU event will take place at the Territory Golf and Country Club in Duncan, Oklahoma.
