Cameron women's golf stays in 10th at UCO

EDMOND, Oklahoma (October 9) – The Cameron women’s golf team finished 10th this afternoon at the 2007 Broncho Masters Fall Classic, consistent with their position from yesterday. The tournament was played at the Kickingbird Golf Club in Edmond. Tarleton State again finished 1st of the 13 schools, with Carla Cooper taking the individual title with 139 (67-72) total strokes. TSU’s team score was 591 (298-293). The Aggies continued their trend of improving at each tournament with a team total of 668.

“It was still really wet when we started this morning so we got off to a slow start,” Head Coach Rick Goodwin said. “But we didn’t play too badly and were able to hit the ball fairly steady.”

Junior Renee Breeze finished up the tournament with a score of 153 (76-77), good enough for a tie at 3rd place with Northeastern State’s Stephanie Bird. Sophomore Anna Hataway tied for 36th with first and second round scores of 84 and 85, respectively, for a total of 169.

Breeze also finished the event with the third-most pars (24), the fourth-best par-five scoring (5.17, +1), and the seventh-best par-four scoring (4.50, +10).

Sophomore Marrik Wooten and freshman Blaze Petty were the only two Aggies who improved their scores on the second day. Wooten went from an 86 to an 85 for a score of 169, while Petty jumped from 94 to 88 for total of 182 strokes. Wooten finished in 44th place while Petty came in 62nd.

There were no really glaring mistakes this time, those are just the numbers we are hitting,” Coach Goodwin said. “Our main thing is that we are getting better each round and that we have things to build on.”

Freshman Megan Whan tied for 57th place with a final score of 177 (87-90). Individual medalist Tori McCollom came in 52nd with scores of 89 and 86 for a total of 175 strokes.

Some of our work in practice is paying off, and we are making progress slowly but surely,” Coach Goodwin added. “We are getting better.”

The Cameron women’s golf team will be hosting the Oklahoma Intercollegiate for Women next Monday and Tuesday, October 15-16, in Duncan, Oklahoma, at the Territory Golf Club. The Aggies finished 3rd out of 8 teams when hosting the tournament last season.
