Goodwin signs top pair for 2010-2011

LAWTON, Oklahoma (December 1) – Cameron University head women’s golf coach Rick Goodwin recently signed two new high-caliber players for the 2010-2011 season. Lindsey Alexander from Southlake, Texas and Aleesha Holden from Fletcher, Oklahoma are the newest additions to the five year old Aggie women’s golf program. Alexander is the daughter of Steve and Tonda Alexander, while Holden is the daughter of Steve and Shelly Holden.

Alexander is a 3-year letter winner at Southlake Carroll High School where she was a member of back-to-back state champion squads. Alexander was instrumental in leading her team to consecutive Texas 5A state championships. In the 2008-2009 season, Alexander was the Southlake Carroll Newcomer of the year and a Dragon Heart recipient.

She was also named the 2008 and 2009 West Texas Junior Champions Tour (WTJCT) Player of the Year where she recorded 21 junior tournament wins and 28 top 15 finishes in two years. Her current tournament scoring average is a 77.4. Alexander is ranked at #39 in the state and #309 in the nation by the Junior Golf Scoreboard.

“Lindsay is going to be a great asset for us,” Coach Goodwin said. “She has played a lot and gained much experience. She played in the Texas Junior Golf Tour (TJGT) for quite a few years, and her high school plays both fall and spring golf so she has a lot of experience there. She averages in the 70’s as a high schooler, so hopefully we can make that even better when she gets to Cameron.”

Goodwin’s other signee, Aleesha Holden, is the younger sister of Johnna Holden, a current member of the Cameron Aggie women’s golf team.

“Aleesha has a proven track record,” Coach Goodwin said. “She has done well in Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour (OJGT) events and will be a good addition for our team. Having Aleesha and her sister (Johnna) on the team together helps with the team camaraderie and chemistry. She brings a lot of experience as she has played a lot of tournament golf. You can’t teach experience, so that is key.”

Holden earned her OJGT status in 2008 after placing 3rd at the Tour Championship with a 153 (76-77). She finished her 2008 OJGT season with an 83 stroke average.

At the Class 2A State Tournament, Holden finished 4th overall as a freshman, 3rd overall as a sophomore (she also made a hole-in-one during the event), and 2nd overall as a junior. This spring Holden will compete in the state tournament for the fourth and final time with her sights set on the 1st overall spot.

Holden has also competed in the South Central PGA Tour since 2008. During the 2008-2009 season, Holden won 6 of 7 tournaments and carried a 79 stroke average. With another 153 (77-76), Holden finished the year with a 2nd place finish at the South Central PGA Tournament of Champions.

The Fletcher product is also a standout in the classroom, as Holden is currently ranked fourth in her class in academics with a near-perfect 3.97 grade point average.

“Both of these young women help to fill the void left by our graduating seniors this year,” Coach Goodwin said. “I expect both Lindsey and Aleesha in our starting lineup next year. When you recruit you try and recruit the best players so we are very fortunate to get two players of this caliber in this recruiting class.”

The Cameron Aggie women’s golf program begins their 2010 spring season next February at the annual St. Edward’s University Invitational in Austin, Texas.

“My goal has been to get better at recruiting, and I’m learning what it takes to get a quality player to the program,” Coach Goodwin said. “Both of these girls want to help us reach our goals of playing deep into the postseason so I’m happy to have them on board. You play the game to win, and these girls will help us do that.”
