Aggies finish 7th in Lady Buff Stampede

AMARILLO, Texas (April 1) – It seems as if the Aggie women’s golf team just can’t catch a break this season. In each of their five tournaments this semester the Cameron women have battled extremely harsh weather, from wind, to cold, to even snow. This week in Amarillo, Texas, the team took part in the Lady Buff Stampede tournament and faced off against ten other teams, not to mention fierce winds that easily turned birdies into bogeys. The event was played at the Tascostoa Country Club and was hosted by West Texas A&M University.

“We played better in the second day,” Head Coach Rick Goodwin said. “We shot 25 shots better as a team, even though it was still really cold and windy.”

At the end of the tournament the Aggies finished in 7th place out of eleven teams, exactly where they were following Monday’s first round. As a team Cameron shot 713 (369-344) and impressively cut 25 shots from their score after today’s second round. CU was a mere two strokes away from tying for sixth place.

“I was happy the girls competed today,” Coach Goodwin said. “They played hard although the conditions were rough again. They did a pretty decent job. Our score was higher than we wanted it to be but after the first round we’ll take it.”

Western New Mexico won the tournament with a two-round team score of 652 (339-313). Tina Bickford of WNMU won the individual title after shooting a 150 (81-69). Clearly the conditions were much better for the second round, but still far from ideal. Eleven teams and fifty-eight golfers took part in the tournament.

“Tuesday’s round I was pleased with because we fought back,” Coach Goodwin said. “We are getting a bit better with each tournament and that’s what we are shooting for.”

Junior Renee Breeze once again led the Aggie women after finishing the event in a tie for 18th place overall. Her two round score was 174 (88-86).

Sophomores Marrik Wooten and Anna Hataway were the only other Aggies to finish the tournament in the top 30, finishing in a tie for 23rd and 27th place, respectively. Wooten shot a 177 (96-81) while Hataway turned in a 180 (92-88). Hataway also finished the event with the fifth-most birdies with 2 total.

Freshman Tori McCollom had a solid tournament after finishing in 33rd place overall. Her two-round score was totaled at 182 (93-89). McCollom also finished the event tied with two other golfers for the best par-three scoring average (3.25, +2).

Another of CU’s freshmen, Megan Whan, rounded out the top five team scores with a total of 203 (107-96) strokes. She showed the largest improvement between the rounds and finished in 49th place.

Competing as an individual medalist, freshman Blaze Petty recorded a two-round score of 192 (93-99). She ended the event in 38th place overall.

This week’s tournament officially brings the 2008 regular season to a close for the Aggie women’s golf team. Their next action does not come until April 21-22 when they compete in the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament. The event will be played at the WinStar Golf Club in Thackerville, Oklahoma, the site of the Red River Intercollegiate event that Cameron took 7th place in just three weeks ago.

“This is it for us before the LSC Tournament,” Coach Goodwin said. “We will take a little time off and then get ready for the conference tournament. We competed today and that was good, and hopefully it will leave a good taste in our mouth when we get ready for the postseason later this month.”
