Breeze first to win LSC scholarship
RICHARDSON, Texas (July 15) – Cameron women’s golfer Renee Breeze added to her remarkable 2008-2009 campaign this week when it was announced that she was one of the first recipients of the Lone Star Conference Degree Completion Scholarship. This is the first year the LSC has given out the scholarship, and only five student-athletes from the conference were given the award.
Breeze, a senior from Lawton, completed her four-year collegiate career at CU this spring. She was one of the original members of the Aggie women’s golf program when it was established prior to the 2005-2006 season.
“Renee was on the Aggie team that won the LSC Championship in our second year. She was also one of the two freshmen I signed on the first team we ever had,” Head Coach Rick Goodwin said. “She took care of business and found time to practice and study. She had a great career for Cameron and I think that her winning this scholarship is a testament to her dedication and hard work.”
The purpose of the LSC Degree Completion Scholarship Program is to provide financial assistance for completion of a first baccalaureate degree to deserving student-athletes in the conference. In the first year of the program, the league is providing more than $11,000, which is funded with assistance from the NCAA Conference Grant program.
“The Lone Star Conference has long recognized the excellence of our teams and individuals in athletic competitions, but implementing this degree-completion program shows our student-athletes that we are equally committed to success in the classroom," said LSC Commissioner Stan Wagnon. "The recipients in this inaugural class are most deserving, and I’m confident they will provide a solid foundation upon which this program will grow for years to come.”
Breeze was a four-time LSC All-Conference selection with two selections each to the All-Conference Second team and Honorable Mention team. She was also named to the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America All-District team and the LSC All-Academic team three times each.
Furthermore, Breeze is a three-time winner of the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American Scholar award. Fellow CU golfer Marrik Wooten was named an All-American Scholar this year as well.
“Renee was one player I never had to worry about,” Coach Goodwin said. “She was steady and never made a lot of mistakes on the golf course. I didn’t have to worry about her in the classroom either because she led by example.”
The Aggie women’s golf team begins their 2009-2010 season on September 14-15 at the annual Dallas Baptist University tournament at The Golf Club of Dallas.
