CU Women finish 11th at NSU
TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma (September 18) – Showing improvement from last week, the Cameron women’s golf team took 11th place at the Northeastern State University Women’s Golf Classic in Tahlequah, Oklahoma today. Second round play wrapped up this afternoon with the Aggies recording 685 strokes (341-344). Tarleton State won the sixteen team event with a team score of 617 (302-315). TSU’s Andrea Lowe took 1st place after posting a 150 (76-74).
“The wind got us quite a bit, and the pins were a lot tougher. We are still striving for improvement and getting better, but still have too many penalty strokes,” Head Coach Rick Goodwin said. “We are not competing right now anywhere near where we need to be. We'll hang in there, get all the kids out there and get some more experience.” Junior Renee Breeze led the Aggie squad through both rounds, finishing in 8th place overall with a two-round score of 156 (76-80). She was the lone Aggie to finish in the top ten. Breeze also led Cameron and was ranked 4th in the tournament in total birdies (4) and par-five scoring (5.13, +1).
“Renee is starting to play like Renee by playing steady and within herself. She doesn’t make big mistakes and had a good tournament,” Coach Goodwin said. “She is a good ball striker, and those are the things I expect out of her. She will be tough all year but that’s the type of player she is.”
Sophomores Marrik Wooten and Anna Hataway finished tied for 40th place and 58th place, respectively. Wooten finished with two-round score of 172 (87-85) while Hataway shot a total score of 179 (90-89).
Freshman Blaze Petty recorded a tournament score of 181 (88-93). She finished the event tied for 60th place.
The biggest improvement shown by an Aggie was by freshman Tori McOllum. She dropped 10 strokes between her first and second rounds to finish with a total score of 190 (100-90). McOllum finished in 71st place. “This tournament was more typical of what Tori can shoot. She was good today and played steady, putted better, and had better focus,” Coach Goodwin said. “We are working on getting her better. Her swing mechanics are getting really good.”
Lawton-product Megan Whan (freshman) played as an individual and finished in a tie for 67th place. Her two round score was recorded at 185 (93-92). “We need to get better every time out; this tournament was better than last week. A lot of today was inexperience and throwing away shots so we will come back and work some more,” Coach Goodwin said. “We have next week off then we go down to Commerce (Texas). Until then we will be doing individual work, and the girls will be working some on their own.”
As mentioned previously, the next tournament the Aggie women’s golf team will compete in is the Texas A&M – Commerce Invite on October 1-2. The event will be played at the Webb Hill Country Club in Wolfe City, Texas.
