Aggies climb to 9th out west

AMARILLO, Texas (September 29) – Today the Aggie women’s golf team wrapped up their final round in West Texas A&M’s annual Lady Buff Stampede tournament at La Paloma Country Club in Amarillo, Texas. Cameron placed 9th overall out of 16 teams with a total team score of 700 (354, 346).

“We played eight shots better than yesterday,” Head Coach Rick Goodwin said. “It wasn’t as cold, but it was really windy today. It’s tough to play golf in those kinds of conditions, but we managed to improve our second round.”

Nationally ranked Tarleton State won the tournament with a team score of 635 (312, 323). Tarleton’s Jacqueline Lau (76, 80) tied with Newman’s Linzi Allan (72, 84) for first place in the tournament with scores of 156.

Cameron senior Kass McGrath once again led the team, landing a 24th place finish with an overall score of 167 (83, 84) for the tournament.

“Kass led us through a difficult tournament,” Goodwin said. “The weather was rough and the course was dry, so she did a great job staying consistent.”

Freshman Kylee Johnson also stood out for the Aggies by improving her second round by three strokes, despite the harsh weather continuing over from the previous day’s round. Johnson shot a 171 (87, 84) for the tournament and placed 34th amongst many golfers more experienced at the collegiate playing level.

“Kylie had a nice 46 from the back and finished with a real strong 38 on the front nine today,” Goodwin said. “We played the back first because the leaders were in the front, but she held on and even improved on the other side so that was a big comeback, especially in that wind. That was the highlight for us.”

Freshman Johnna Holden, junior Megan Whan, and senior Marrik Wooten finished with scores of 202 (99-103), 188 (96-92) and 174 (88-86), respectively.

“We’re just kinda beat up; it was tough weather-wise and we’re not happy. We just need to go back to work,” Goodwin said, “We played better than yesterday, but still difficult. We go to UCO Sunday, and we’ve got to come back Thursday and Friday ready to take the ball back.”

The Cameron women’s golf team will compete in the UCO Lady Broncho Masters Classic at the Lincoln Park Golf Course in Oklahoma City next week, October 5-6.
