Aggie women blow away Savage Storm
LAWTON, Oklahoma (March 11) – The nationally ranked #30 Cameron Aggie women’s tennis team (4-3) easily dispatched of the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm this afternoon in a Lone Star Conference battle at the CU Tennis Center. The Aggies swept the Storm across the board, winning the match 9-0. With the victory CU moves back above .500 on the season.
“Our girls went out there and took care of business today,” Head Coach James Helvey said. “I’m real proud of how they played. Now we need to keep playing at this high level.”
Cameron immediately got things going by winning all six singles matches very quickly. The weather cooperated and provided a beautiful afternoon of tennis.
The closest singles match of the afternoon was in the No. 5 slot where sophomore Carolina Mullor defeated Jenna Newton 6-3, 6-4.
Mullor then teamed up with junior Irene George to win the No. 1 doubles match 8-5, over SOSU’s Jennie Paine and Ashley Grayson. George easily won her No. 1 singles match, defeating Amber Thompson 6-1, 6-0.
Senior Kim Romero and junior Viviana Seca had a close call in the No. 2 doubles match, the closest doubles contest of the afternoon. The duo was forced to a pair of extra games as they defeated the Savage Storm No. 2 doubles tandem of Jenna Newton and Deana Brooks, 9-7.
Romero won the No. 2 singles match over Ashley Grayson 6-0, 6-2, while Seca won the No. 4 singles match over Deana Brooks 6-3, 6-2.
The easiest doubles match of the day came in the No. 3 slot where senior Megan deBlonk and junior Sophia Rich defeated Sara Schmidt and Amber Thompson, 8-2. Megan deBlonk also won her No. 3 singles match over Jennie Paine 6-4, 6-1. Rich did not play singles this afternoon.
In the No. 6 singles position, freshman Whitney Renfurm defeated Sara Schmidt 6-1, 6-1. Renfurm did not play doubles this afternoon.
“Overall we played very well,” Coach Helvey said. “This team has the potential to be incredible and we are moving in that direction.”
The Aggie women’s and men’s tennis teams travel to Pensacola, Florida, later this week to take part in the West Florida Invitational tournament. The teams will compete from March 13-19 and will take on some of the top tennis programs in the entire nation.
The women’s team’s next home contest is on March 26 when the Aggies host the Patriots of Dallas Baptist University at 1:00pm at the CU Tennis Center. Remember that parking and admission to Cameron tennis events is always free of charge.
