#25 Aggies fall to #2 Pirates at home
LAWTON, Oklahoma (April 5) – In their final match of this weekend’s five-team tennis event, the #25 Cameron Aggie women’s tennis team (8-8) concluded with the #2 Armstrong Atlantic State University Pirates at the CU Tennis Center. AASU won this morning’s match by the score 9-0, but many of the matches were much closer than the overall score indicates. Cameron moved up five rankings in the latest national poll released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association yesterday.
“I was pleased with the way we played,” Head Coach James Helvey said. “We played real well. Every now and then though you have to admit when your opponent is much stronger than you are.”
Cameron was nearly able to come away with a win in the first three doubles matches, after narrowly dropping the No. 2 doubles match. Senior Megan deBlonk and junior Viviana Seca played a very good match but lost by the score 8-4.
Freshman Whitney Renfurm played very well in the No. 5 singles match and nearly forced it to a third and final set. She lost 6-1, 6-3 in an exciting match.
“AASU is literally in a position to win the national title,” Coach Helvey said. “It was fun to get to play them. They were strong all the way up and down the line, but we were able to battle with them. Even though the results show that we were being blown away, in the heart of each match we were able to rally. We were able to hang with them.”
The Aggie women’s tennis team travels the short distance south to Wichita Falls, Texas, this Tuesday (April 8) to take on the Midwestern State Mustangs. The match between the two Lone Star Conference rivals begins at 1:00pm on the campus of MSU.
“Midwestern has a good team, but after playing a team like AASU we won’t be overwhelmed with it,” Coach Helvey said. “Tuesday is a big match both in the conference and the region. It’s another one of those ‘must-wins.’ We want to stay in the top four in our region, and to do that we’ll have to win it.”
In other Cameron tennis news, the Aggies men’s team catapulted to #7 in the entire nation in the ITA ranking released yesterday afternoon. The team had previously been ranked #11 nationally.
